The Ala Mihi Syndrome in Hawaii: re Dean
We locals have a saying re native Hawaiians and their struggle towards a better lifestyle. They are likened to a bunch of alamihi crabs we catch on the beach/rocks as kids; we do this at night, all the kids in the camp join in with flashlites and we go about laughing and falling and in general having pure joy. In the end, they are set free.

The crabs are put in a bucket. but it is noticed that when one crab in trying to escape, is pulled back down by the others. Thus the Syndrome.

When one Kanaka(Hawaiian Male) gets up there, the other Hawaiins try to pull him back down; all too often succeeding.

And so: I was reminded of this when viewing the debate last night.

Poor Dean, he the guy trying to reach out of the bucket and he reaches near the top.... only to be grabbed/attacked by the rest. It was pure Human Me ism. You know Me first. I saw a lot of denial, anger, etc.

They would have all looked very American and very wise if they just pragmatically joined into the Dean Camp with unity. The focus is Bush. by attacking Dean or each other, we eat our own.

But then, Humans are such emotional creatures.

There is still time: Much can be done to recover from this and perhaps learn from it as well/

Come, we light up the fire for the food, we got a luau for the Dems to put on.

Come, we enjoy UNITY

1. WOW, what a nice analogy
Even if you are wrong about the debate, that was a wonderful analogy.

In your opinion, do the other crabs pull the one down because they like the bucket, or because they don't want to see others succeed where they themselves fail?

3. Let us hope that the luau menu will not include the nine "alamihi crabs"!
When the crabs pull one another down into the bucket, the winner is... the kid who has the bucket. In this case, that'd be Bush* -- and we know what he used to do to frogs!

6. except for moments
i hated the debates -- they all looked pretty awful given their turn -- as they always do when not talking about repukes and bush.
they should have all spanked koppel -- not just kucinich.
blech -- and i agree when they spend too much time knocking each other about -- it just looks childish -- and i think they are a great cast of characters -- i like alot of them.

8. This is the process we use; What we saw was the down side of it.
In trying to look good, we made ourselves look weak.

How was that for traction..?

Come, we listen to Al Franken rip Ann Coulter a new one. She makes things up for the Pub Sheep.

9. Ehhhh
Sorry, but how many candidates are trying to save this country from its own horrible policies?

What you see as 'tearing down' or 'pulling them back down' I see as pointing out differences.

Can't all be sweetness and light unless you want people voting for who gives them the warm fuzzies the fastest, and not who has the best policies.

10. I agree the intent of the process warrants the debates.
I just wish there is a way to improve it to aliviate the simmering acrimony. There has to be a better way beside the verbal blood lust I thought I saw.

We are using a system very old but I fear we are stuck in 3rd gear, perhaps there are higher gears we don;t know about, maybe don't want to know about?

Come, we go surfing, bring long board, the waves are high today. Winter time is best.

11. You just said a mouthful, friend
"perhaps there are higher gears we don;t know about, maybe don't want to know about?"

Most definitely. Change is scary.

As for me, I don't think it could happen a moment too soon. :)

12. Kick the bucket ...over.

Great story, opihimoimoi. Great moral, too: We must all work our way out together.

Remember Aesop and the parable of the sticks?

The Bundle of Sticks

An old man on the point of death summoned his sons around him to give them some parting advice. He ordered his servants to bring in a bundle of sticks, and said to his eldest son: "Break it." The son strained and strained, but with all his efforts was unable to break the bundle. The other sons also tried, but none of them was successful. "Untie the bundle," said the father, "and each of you take a stick." When they had done so, he called out to them: "Now, break," and each stick was easily broken. "You see my meaning," said their father.

Union gives strength.

PS: This is one of the lessons I've taken to heart since first hearing it when I was 13. Today, I find that I like your story just as much. Thanks, my DU Friend! If Ho-Ho's the nominee, he's my man. Until then...

Go John Kerry. I'll kick the bucket over for ya!

15. Nice story
The problem I recognized with the debate was the first questions, it was as if Koppel was baiting the candidates to go at each other and I personally think the candidates did an excellent job of not taking the bait. Kuninich and Kerry put Koppel in his place and Kerry remarked at least once that he agreed with Dean on an issue. I believe they all did very well.

18. Yes, I agree, they all did well under the circomstanses. It was unusual
because of Gores endorsement the previous day.

Sooner or later the strongest will emerge.

Gore must of felt Dean is the front runner to the point that to delay was counterproductive. Hence his early endorsement.

If Dean is that far ahead, then a bandwagon effect should soon be taking place regardless the first primary is several weeks ahead.

I feel if we really want to unite the DEM Party, now would be the best time. But Sharpton, et al feel the opposite and wish to continue, which is understandable,

Bur soon, there will be one nominee and we should give our full support, the bundle of sticks thing.
