McAuliffe is tied to the Clintons and the DLC. He prefers either Clark ,Edwards, Lieberman or maybe Kerry and Gebhart. As DNC Chairman he can move a lot of votes on the convention floor in a brokered convention situation, and he would have used that job to deny Dean the nomination if the primaries failed to do so.
