Best Republican you ever voted for?
Every once in a while they come along--Republicans who we can actually vote for. They're a rare breed, maybe close to extinction...

I'm young, didn't actually vote for him, but I'll start out with former Washington State Governor Dan Evans.

What happened to that kind of Republican? My folks (lifelong liberal dems) voted for him. Any of you out there ever break ranks to vote Republican? Was it a good choice?

4. I live in a conservative area
and I have had many friends over the years run for local office as repubs. I always vote for those I know and like locally, but never in statewide or national elections.

12. same here
i live in a conservative area, and in a past election I vote for the Republican challenger to Bob Ney in the republican primaries

I will admit there is a difference between Populist Republicans and Corporate Conservatives...I don't like either...but I hate conservatives

6. Only once, in a Republican gubernatorial primary
You can vote for either party in WI primary elections, and I voted for Ben Masel in his run against Tommy Thompson years ago. Ben was/is a local Madison pot legalization 'icon' (I guess he's been around long enough to earn 'icon' status) who ran as the 'candidate with nothing to hide'.

Literallly. He did most of his campaigning stark naked.

There was a rather revealing poster his campaign made of him with that 'Nothing to Hide' slogan that started showing up all over Madison, and where ever a music festival or Rainbow-type event had been. I have to say, it's the first time I recall seeing a candidate for governor naked.

I guess you had to be there.

Ben lost, of course. I voted for the Democrat in the general election.

He lost too.

11. arlen specter, before anita hill
Many, many, many moons ago, Arlen Specter used to be the Democrats' secret weapon. He'd vote with the Dems nearly as often as with the repugs. He was our Trojan Horse in the GOP.

Then came the Clarence Thomas hearings (which I still chock up to the brain tumor he was diagnosed with soon after ... I'm not being funny) and selling his soul to the conservative wing of the GOP.

But now, Rep. Joseph Hoeffel is challenging Specter for the PA Senate seat and Charlie Crystle "took one for the team" and dropped out ... so Joe's got my vote. ... I'll vote for anyone but Specter (and Santorum, of course, when he's next up for re-election).

I have voted for moderate Republicans I know personally, for local offices. But it's been a long time.

I'd vote for David Gergen for something (provided the Democrat he was running against was an idiot).

8. Just too young to vote for Goldwater
Of course, "they" told me that if I voted for Barry we'd be at war in VietNam within a year.

Amazing how right "they" were.

I would have voted for Nelson Rockefeller if he'd ever gotten the nomination but by that time the right wing had their claws too far into the GOP for that to happen.

Poor Nelson. Seems he didn't have as strong a constitution as Bill Clinton. On the other hand, there are worse ways to die.

9. There was this one guy...
Steven Michael, the ACT-UP activist who ran for the Washington state legislature in 1992, and also put himself on the Republican primary ballot for president against B*s* that year. He ran to the left of the Democrat and lost by a 25-75% margin.
