Homeless dining on pheasant?
Okay,so we all know about Cheney's bird massacre on Monday. But what happened to the dead birds?

I was listening to KDKA radio in Pittsburgh on the way home today when I heard a clip of a reporter asking a Cheney spokesperson what had happened to the 419 pheasants plus the unknown number of ducks Cheney and his party shot on Monday. The answer was something along the lines of "the usual procedure is to donate them to food banks, soup kitchens, and other charities."

A trip to the KDKA Web site yielded this story:

http://kdka.com/siteSearch/local_story_344154903.html

Here we find this line:

"The birds were then plucked and vacuum-packed in time for Cheney's afternoon flight back to Washington, DC."

Counting ducks, probably a thousand birds were shot. We know they were vacuum packed. It's difficult to imagine Cheney traveling back to Washington with all those dead birds and we have the statement implying that at least some were donated to soup kitchens.

It would be interesting to find out what the reaction of the soup kitchens and the people eating there was to these rather unusual menu items. It would also be interesting to find out if the birds show up on a tax return as a charitable contribution.

1. Have you ever eaten wild pheasant?
The closest comparison I can make is to shoe leather.

4. Wild pheasant is probably . .
.. the best tasting bird there is, except for maybe Chukar, but they are smaller.

Also, pheasants are ground birds and can be raised on "farms". Ducks are migratory. They can be raised on farms but those are fat pet ducks like you see in parks.

Huntable ducks fly in flocks and land in marshes and ponds during their migration, which is when the are hunted. I've never heard of anyone raising wild ducks to be hunted. If they could do that, I can't imagine how they could be kept from heading south.

Wild ducks are not nearly as good to eat because their breasts (which are their wing muscles) are full of blood vessels and therefore gamey tasting. Pheasants spend 99.9% of their lives walking - so their breasts are all white meat. Mmmmmm.

5. Drooling while writing...
Wild duck, marinated in a zesty italian dressing for an hour or so prior to roasting is the food of the gods. My favorite. Pheasant is a close second, especially with a raisin/chestnut stuffing. Domestic duck is just too fatty for my tastes.

Have to be so goddamn greedy!! 1000 birds. That's animal abuse. Where's the damn game warden. Another fucken charge to add to this asscrack's illustrious career. I guess he only pops up when he needs to slaughter some birds. Pheasant under glass. Of course, they even have to eat akin to royalty!!

10. I don't understand that either.
There are bag limits. But I guess that doesn't apply to that greedy pig.
