O'Really: "Canada is bankrupt because of its socialistic system."
Edited on Wed Dec-10-03 08:14 PM by _Jumper_
Is it just me or has the Canadian government achieved budget surpluses for the past several years and reduced its debt? How does that compare to how we have fared with respect to our budget and debt in the past three years?

He and many other right-wingers are trying to convince their minions that Canada would be a Third World nation without America.

Budget surplus

Finance Minister John Manley announced that Canada's budget surplus for the fiscal year 2002-2003 was a whopping $7 billion.

38. Dec 4: $2.3 billion surplus "worst case scenario" - more likely $9 BILLION
Edited on Wed Dec-10-03 09:23 PM by Minstrel Boy
CTV News: "surplus likely higher than estimated"

The federal surplus may be much larger than first projected by Finance Minister John Manley last month. Manley said the surplus would be $2.3 billion. But The Globe and Mail says economists now believe that figure is a few billion dollars higher -- perhaps as high as $9 billion.

That means incoming prime minister Paul Martin will likely be able to spend more. He's promised $2 billion to the provinces for health care. It also means Martin will have a bit more leeway to introduce new programs before he calls an election next spring.

...

Both Manley's office and the Prime Minister's Office now agree the $2.3-billion projection is probably too conservative, federal sources told The Globe. The $2.3-billion "is the worst-case scenario," the source said.

10. Canada's economy is in better shape than the U.S. economy
in the balance sheet. O'Really is a fool.
BTW, over Thanksgiving I had to go a few states over and meet my GF's father. He told me that the Canadian health care system is "a bunch of CRAP" and further opined that the entire nation of Canada should go to hell.
The only way I could account for his venom was to put it down to resentment toward a country that not only has the preposterous notion that doing things differently than the USA might be better for them, but also has the impossible nerve to perch right next to us, making comparisons easy.

and we have another projected one coming up. We are #1 in the G8 for economic strength and growth. Hmmmm, socialism is bad!

I wonder if a memo went out to pick on Canada today? I wonder if our incoming Prime Minister has made it clear to the Bush cabal that we are NOT the 51st state?

our advantage. If * thinks we're bankrupt maybe he won't be trying to beg any more money from us for Iraq and Martin can quitely build an even bigger surplus....how big was the US deficit this year, maybe we should ask O'really.

20. Wingnuts love to bash Canada
I used to work with some, and I'd say something favorable about Canada, and they'd smirk, or scoff, or cough... I'd ask why, and they would derisively sneer at their "socialism". I would retort by saying,"Outside of a few show business people, you don't exactly see Canadians overrunning the border to live here, do you?" Then I'd expound on why universal single-payer health care is the way to go, and they'd either concede a few points or shut up just so I would. :-)

This is one of the funniest things I've heard for a while.

Not doubt O'lie-ly's pimps are worried that Americans might start wondering why our economy is going into the toilet, so of course you attack one of your closest neighbors and trading partners.

No doubt they'll soon find that Canada is a state sponsor of terrorism...

35. you make the mistake of assuming
they're like normal human beings.

Yes, you might think that you'd never want to buy a doll of your favourite political figure, being an adult; so why should they?

Remember that many right wingers have a deep seated need for authority figures (in many ways, this is what actually defines 'right wing' - the original was the pro-monarchist part of the French parliament). This may indicate they've never completely grown up, and still feel the need for physical contact with an authority figure for comfort and reassurance. The doll's the nearest they'll get to it.

Let's see him say this in front of a very large group of Canadians so we can watch an entire crowd of people laughing uproariously at O'Really. It's exactly the kind of response he deserves.

Apparently, the fact that there are several social democracies that are actually thriving or doing just fine is too severe a shock to the reality of many laissez-faire capitalists.

for a long time that Canada is teetering on the brink of collapse because of it's "socialism".

Scare tactics. Socialist Canada has one foot in the grave, it's falling to pieces. Welfare capitalism doesn't work, the nanny state is discredited, worker's unions ruin the economy, blah blah blah.
