Just got back from the Kerry speech on corporate responsibility
he was energetic, charismatic, and on point-- he said this administration's "creed is greed" I loved that.

He also laid out his plans for closing loopholes in the tax code and his support for Rich O'Neil's legislation which would make "offshore" companies come back and pay the billions of dollars in taxes they've been avoiding since Bush took office. (Companies like Tyco, which are now claiming they reside in Bermuda).

I was sitting by the press and overheard the fox reporter talking smack about Kerry (no surpise there), but also heard that Linda Bloodworth-Thomason (of Clinton fame) is backing Clark, and Bill Bradley will endorse Dean sometime next week.

1. Kerry is a great candidate
I would like to see his campaign take off. He has a lot of good things to say and I, for one, would like to hear them throughout the primary season.

I would be proud to campaign for and donate to his campaign should he win the nomination, and he is certainly in a position to win the nomination.

2. Bill Bradley?
Really? So Gore's primary opponent is going to endorse the same guy as Gore...that's great.

Ok, sorry, this is a Kerry thread, but that bit jumped out at me.

Kerry is good at formulating and explaining policy to those that will listen. I think in Gore's case, they called it "being a policy wonk".

3. What a thrill
We in the west don't get to see the candidates like the eastern region does.

5. Glad you went!
Did you see my post last night about his firehouse appearance in Nashua? It was on CSPAN. He was serving chili, and had to apologize to someone for not having any vegetarian chili available. First thing I thought of was "D'oh! Kirsten will not be pleased!"

To me, the best part about Kerry's platform is his plan for small businesses. He knows how they must remain sound so that we have a Main Street to counteract Wall Street. Encouraging on what he plans to do with offshore multinationals.

Bad news about Bradley though, I supported him in 2000 until he dropped out. Now HE'S on the crappy bandwagon. Ah well, I have never changed my mind about a candidate yet based on an endorsement. Like DK said, it just distracts from talking about the issues.

7. Yeah, I was disappointed in the Bradley news as well
I've always admired him and never took him to be someone that would jump on a bandwagon of any sort.

I hope there's veggie fare at the birthday party tonight! Otherwise I'll have to start supporing DK, my favorite vegan!

11. bradley & dean
.... then maybe he's doing it for his own reasons, not to jump on a bandwagon. Give him the credit, you've given him in the past, even if you don't agree with him now.

On Kerry, I like that "creed is greed" soundbite. Seems like Kerry has stepped his rhetoric up a notch or two the past month.

8. but can you offer any evidence from kerry's past that would confirm...
...that he actually would follow through on this? What votes has he made that show his willingness to fight the corporations?

12. Kerry-McCain Corporate Reform
I forget the name of this act and I've posted it before and get tired of looking up the exact name. Anyway, it's a proposal that every year a list of pork be drawn up and it gets an up or down vote. All of it goes, or all of it stays. It's a way to bring it all out to the people's attention and allow us to put pressure on Congress to get rid of it. There's other legislation that he's worked on that got rid of pork. He says every time they think something is gone for good, 3 years later, back it comes. Very frustrating. He is serious about it.

Kerry out to curb mutual funds
Candidate says he will crack down on abuses in industry

David M. Halbfinger, New York Times Friday, December 12, 2003

Boston -- Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., said Thursday that he would crack down on abuses in the mutual fund industry if elected president and called for expanding the anti-racketeering laws to fight a "new age of organized crime that comes from corporate offices."

Speaking at Northeastern University, Kerry said he would end the rapid- fire, quick-turnaround trades known as market timing, in which fund managers and big investors have been allowed to profit at the expense of long-term shareholders.

"In America, it shouldn't matter whether you're rich or poor, it shouldn't matter whether you're a wealthy investor or a family saving for retirement," he said. "There should be equal opportunity for all, instead of special privileges for the few."

Kerry spoke in the home city of Putnam Investments, the nation's fifth- largest fund company, which in October became the first mutual fund company sued by state and federal securities regulators for civil fraud. Since then, lawmakers in Congress have begun to call for significant changes in regulating the industry.
