Clark To Nab Big Endorsements

Top New York Democrats To Endorse Retired General

Dec 11, 2003 4:11 am US/Mountain
NEW YORK (CBS) A day after he called President Bush an arrogant "bully" at a Manhattan fund-raiser, Democratic presidential candidate Wesley Clark was expected to be endorsed by Harlem congressman Charles Rangel and, according to the New York Post, two of New York's top Democrats, Senate Minority Leader David Paterson and Assemblyman Keith Wright.

Analysis: Clark Rides High in VP Stakes
Posted Dec. 11, 2003

By Martin Sieff
WASHINGTON (UPI) -- These are strange days for Democratic presidential contender Wesley Clark. His prospects are not as bright as he had hoped, but far more so than many expected.

The retired U.S. Army general and former NATO supreme commander finds himself losing key ground in polls almost by the day to the surging Democratic front-runner Howard Dean. Yet he remains well funded with strong reservoirs of political support, and cuts a far more effective figure than any of the veteran congressmen and senators in the race for their party's presidential nomination.

1. The NY state senate has a dem MINORITY?
that's surprising.

I think that shows NY isn't as safe a dem stronghold as many think. Even in a presidential election

5. Dean has been a dem
How long has clark been one? He was selected by a power group to run and was not even a dem.

We have a great field of people that are loyal to our party. Why do we go outside?

I hope others will wake up to this selection process and not an election process. Remember where clinton was in the polls at the time he first ran. Dems did not go out and get a bush look alike who was not even a dem with military experience to run. Did clinton with numbers at the time like many of our fine candidates do ok?

10. divide and conquer, thanks for sharing the love
I think that I will quit saying that I am a Dean supporter if people keep coming here and acting like this. I like Clark and would happily pound the pavement for him. Clark is personally responsible for helping get rid of Milosovich. My sister-in-law is from Montengro. Her mother is Serbian and her father is Muslim. If Milosovich had not been taken out her family would be dead right. Clark is a great man and a brilliant general, he has my gratitude always.

Dean people, if you don't quit going to these threads and starting this flamebait you are personally helping Karl Rove to divide and conquer the Dems. Keep that in mind, would you.

3. I do not understand the interest in clark
I am now leaning away from dean to DK. I do not like to power groups selecting either dean or clark. At least dean has been one of us and proud of it. Why do we need to go outside and get a zell miller type to run?

Most of us on here are pro-union. In a union they would never let the bosses at top bring in a friend to get a promotion over a union worker who toiled in the job for years. Why do we let it happen?

Why do we let the media and the two power groups tell us who we can vote for and that other loyal dems must get out of the race.

I think this is going to help anybody but dean clark (ABDC). I hope the very independent voters of NH will stay true and vote against selecting by power groups and not electing by the people.

I don't know if you can trust these polls by the media. I was shock to see that clinton when he ran the first at this time of the year was down in the polling numbers of DK and Al. He won and also got a lot of bad pr after that poll was taken.

I have a feeling that dems are sick of having power groups select and we will elect our man or woman this time.

7. instead of hanging labels, look into Clark's issues
To understand Zell Miller, you only have to look at what he believes. At clark04.com you can find out what Clark believes. Can't a person's political ideas change and mature over time? Zell Miller has been a Democrat all of his life -- does that make him more credible in your eyes than Clark? Obviously, Miller has changed over the years. So, obviously, has Clark. Why do you think he rubbed so many guys in the military the wrong way?

Remember that this is a guy who has always wanted to serve his country and decided the military was the way to do that. My impression of his voting record is that for a long time he bought into that line that the Republicans have been giving people that the Republicans are stronger on security, and since he was in the military, security was his primary issue. But he voted for Clinton twice and Gore once. In Arkansas, I remember reading something like 95% of people register as Independents, so not formally joining the Democratic party was natural. But it sounds like his ideas began to change at least 10 years ago. Why don't you learn where he stands on the issues and make your decision based on whether those match up, instead of a knee jerk reaction to what other people -- including those in power groups -- are doing. If you base your decision on what these groups are saying, instead of on what the candidates are saying, then you've let them influence you and done yourself a disservice.

9. How do you know he voted for Clinton and Gore?
I just do not understand why he is running and he was selected by one of the two power groups.

We have great candidates that have been working hard for years for dems. You can find as many quotes like Zell Miller praising bush and his team from Clark.

Can you find any from dk or dean?

Something is wrong when we have to go outside the party.

15. Interest in Clark?
Here is my story. I have been watching the General for months now. I added my voice to the draft movement and was very thrilled when he answered our call.

This Tuesday, I stood with a group of people from Arkansas who traveled to New Hampshire as part of the first Clark Convoy, outside of radio station where the General was giving an interview.

I was there when he came out of the station and beamed from ear to ear as we all "called the hogs" substituting "Wes Clark" for "Razorbacks". I listened to him say that having the support of people like us meant more to him than a "big name" endorsement. I listened as he said that he never in his life dreamed of being in a fight for democracy and the future of our country. Then, as he walked through our small group, he smiled at me and said I looked great in all my camo gear that I carried north to keep me warm. His wife, Gert, hugged my daughter and said that she remembered us and even remembered that we were from Bald Knob, Arkansas.

This man is a man who never intended to be a politician. He is a man who spent his life in service to his country. He was retired and finally brought his wife "home" to a place where they could enjoy the rest of their lives peacefully. The we asked and he answered. How can we not be "interested"?

8. Clark selected?
By whom? Some nebulous 'power elite'? There was a rather large group of activist/normal Americans powering the Draft Clark movement. Naturally, he talked to powerful Dems before deciding. Which candidate didn't. Looks like Dean has been quietly consulting with Gore, talked to Clinton & Carter early, etc. Does that make Dean "selected"? Nope, only a prudent politician.
