Poll question: Al Gore: Your Opinion?
Given the wonderful Dem unity I've seen on the board since Monday, I thought I might see if I can gauge the feelings toward him after all the hoo-ha.

The answers are limited, but you can include whatever criterion you need to answer the question. Some may feel strongly about his 2000 campaign, while at the same time not agreeing with his decision to endorse Dean. So, basically, thumbs-up or thumbs-down.

16. Al Gore is my President
He's a man of integrity who has given a lot to this party and this nation. He's a classy guy and I love him.

However, I disagree vehemently with him about his endorsement.

(Gosh, this is three politicians I've praised today. I need a break.)

of Gore went down when he refused Clinton's support during his own primary race. So this is nothing new, really. Not his endorsement of Dean, but his handling of his endorsement of Dean just confirmed what I thought of him.

14. Agreeing with your agreement
Gore is just the flipside of the same corporatist coin.

Of course, lately he's gotten all "liberal" on us: agaisnt IWR, for universal healthcare, more outspoken on liberal issues.

But where the hell was THIS Al Gore when we TRULY needed him, in 2000? Why did he behave like the 1988 Al Gore (which was overwhelmingly rejected in the primaries) instead of the "fighting" Al Gore he professed to always be?

Gore and his DLC-Centrist ilk are symptom of what's wrong with this sellout party, not the solution.

30. We need to go Hard Left and purify
Yes, it may hurt for awhile but you build from your base outward not from "not-your-base" inward. Better for the Democratic Party in the long run.

Our time will come. Policial movements aren't measured in years, but in decades and generations.

I'm glad you are promoting voting for the left candidate in the primary - we'll be a force at the convention, and if Dean does win it he's going to have to kiss our ass a lot. Whoever is the nominee, we'll all vote against Bush. So thanks! You are promoting the best strategy on DU, even if that wasn't your intention! :hi:

11. Wasn't impressed with his 2000 performance...
But since his opposition to the Iraq war, coming out in favor of single-payer healthcare, and his moveon speeches, he's earned my respect. I believe it when I hear he regrets relying too much on advisors and would just "let it rip" if he had to do it over again.

20. I like Clark
But Gore stirred the pot when he backed Dean. So it's all very exciting and the Dem Party is geting lots of press about it. It's getting people talking and maybe some complacent folks out there in snoozeville will wake up and have a listen.

So although I wish he'd waited and then gave his nod to Clark, with enthusiasm, I think we're still on a good track. Gore is getting better news coverage than GW, who by comparison looks like a real schmuck with his schmucky policies that come at us almost weekly. GW is downhill on skates while the Dem Party is an exciting thing to watch. The Clinton wing of the Party needs to turn up the gas and the rest of the candidates can all keep up the work of getting out the message.

And, btw, Karl Rove can eat s**t!

22. I think he's basically a decent sort.
I voted for him in 2000, along with the rest of the IGNORED souls, and would do it again tomorrow.

I also hope there's some kind of divine justice being readied for Bush, Rove & Co., because they really have it coming.

That said, I don't necessarily agree with Gore's decision to endorse Dean. Still, I'll vote for Dean if he wins the nomination and is sweet to his wife. :-)

25. The more I think about it
Edited on Thu Dec-11-03 06:13 PM by DemCam
and try to understand this endorsement, the more it seems like Gore just inserted his own agenda into this primary. In my opinion it was unfolding really well. Dean running a good campaign, Clark learning to be on the hustings and getting his message out, Kerry sinking and readjusting, Gephardt being the best he can be, Lieberman moving along with the flow and Dennis enunciating clearly his message for those who love his message....and Edwards being adorable and Al entertaining us while speaking out...and the lovely Carol being Carol.

And now we have a party power struggle out in the open for enemies to enjoy...Can you imagine the RNC's glee.

And the location of the endorsement was espeically troubling and revealing in so many ways.

Of course if he had endorsed my candidate I would have high fived all the way down the block...but then the symbolism of the endorsement would have put the Dean folks over the edge frothing.

We were frothing enough as it was.

I'm happy to see that most of you are a bigger person than I am. I think Al Gore has made this about him...and he had his chance, blew it, blew it again by not running, and now this.

I hope to goodness that he is promoting his leadership of the Democratic Party as a reinvented liberal instead of the moderate hawk that he was instead of positioning himself for a presidential run in 2008.

Ick

And I respect and admire Al Gore tremendously. The fact that he endorsed Howard Dean is his decision. I disagree, but it doesn't change my thoughts about either man.

Grown-ups, you see, are able to disagree with someone without HATING them. Provided, of course, that they respected them in the first place.

Would you believe I even disagree with General Clark once in a while?

Have you ever disagreed with Dr. Dean?

26. It doesn't affect my decision.
Al Gore is a good Democrat, he is an intelligent man, he has done much for the environment and education, he was a great candidate in 2000 (perhaps a little too restrained at times, but still). I am not a Dean supporter, in fact I am still undecided, and I hold nothing against Al for supporting Dean. Granted, I do not like some things about Dean but do not think it's necessarily a tragedy Gore endorsed him.

I've come full circle on Gore now. I thought he blew the 2000 election. Then I gained respect for him when he used his visibility to attack Bush's ruining of our country. Now, I'm back to seeing him as Mr. Blow It.

No wonder we have Bush now. And there will be no wonder if we have Bush again.

47. Hard to understand this man

He can and has spoken with passion, stumping the nation with ever increasing support and tumultuous ovations greeting his speeches. Then he drops out of the race just as his momentum is building. Now he prematurely ejaculates all over the nomination process.....

I could conjecture about his endorsement being a slap in the face to those who ousted him from the race (given the aforementioned momentumn building stumping)but I hate to do so without definitive knowledge of either occurance.

Like I said, a hard man to understand.
