The North wont vote for a southerner
Im not sure why, maybe its their conservative ways, maybe its because they just dont understand Northerners. Exactly why we need a Yankee running for President, its the only way we win this election. A southerner will vote for a Yankee when a Yankee wont vote for someone from the South.
A Northerner hasnt elected a Southerner for Pres since Jesus was a baby. I hate to say it but I believe racism is part of it. Yankees havent voted for a Rebel since the Civil Rights bill and the Souths favor for the bill.

Now doesnt this sound stupid?

I do believe that the North voted for both Clinton and Carter

You obviously want Dean so bad that you are willing to overlook some serious cultural issues.

There are many people in the South who want a Southerner to represent them. It is a simple fact of politics. I don't pretend to understand all the reasons behind it, but it exists.

And what about Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter and Lyndon Johnson? Illinois went for those Southern candidates.

9. well, Clark was born in Chicago
So in a way, you'd get 2 for 1, based on his Arkansas upbringing. :-)

Funny, all their last names start with "C".

11. You hit the nail on the head
Conservative Southerners are cultural imperialists. Many "democratic" southerners are cultural imperialists as well. Well I say screw the South, not out of any animosity to the majority of the people but because I believe that if they don't want us we sure as hell shouldn't act as if we want them.

13. Bush is a southerner...
...so when you're running against Bush, the north not voting for a southerner will have no effect.

This election will be won or lost in the South.

19. it's now where you are born...
...it's where your support is. CT voted for Gore and TX (and the whole South) voted for Bush.

Nobody can deny that the Bush has a big lead in the South and <insert any Democrat here> has a big lead in the North.

17. Clinton won, Dukakis lost.
As simple as that.

Clinton brought his state's electoral votes along with him, no matter who we put up we'll get MA and VT.

People don't go around talking about southern states just to be cute.

20. Yes it does sound stupid-
Take a look at the electoral map of 2000- Al Gore, a southerner, carried only northern states.

you got it back-aswards...It's the southerners that won't vote for a northerner. in fact, it's more like- southerners won't vote for a Democrat.

23. It's SARCASM!
:)

Isn't it a shame that southerners won't vote for a yankee. It's like the south consists of a majority of bigotted idiots who only vote from someone below the mason dixon.

I think its a real issue in America this north v south divide which still exists and I'm very curious as to why. I asumme the civil war, confederate flag, and old prejudice and fear of the north.

34. well....DUH!
The poster wants us to think that since the idea of a northerner not supporting a southerner is so ridiculous, then the opposite, southerners not supporting a northerner is equally as ridiculous.
Unfortunatley, that isn't so- the Northerners are capable of reasoned thoughts, unlike the inbred descendants of criminals and the mentally ill south of the mason-dixon line.

24. to show how dumb it sounds...
when the media and people say how the south won't vote for someone from the north.

Now reveresed because we know southerners can easily win in the north, so why is the majority in the south so xenophobic to the north!? Is this not the same country.

32. man is that a can of worms
"Is this not the same country."

heh.
ok - let's talk about the 'flyover states'
there's a tremendous difference between Metropolis/Cali and Kansas, almost to the point that they're different countries. We can say the same thing about the differences between the tiny states (DE, RI, etc) and the bigguns (TX, FL) - so we can make a regional generalization based on all sorts of criteria

We know we own NY/CA - and we have trouble in the heartland...
Big/Small states doesnt really work out so well - since we split em up pretty well due to other regional issues

Then again - look at California. Northern California and Southern California are 2 very very different animals - but are they not the same state?

If someone makes the case that the South is a certain way - i think we can talk about why, or what can be done to bring them around etc... but i think we have to operate from the assumption that the south is the way it is and it isnt going to change in 11 months. Let's look at it as an operational condition, rather than a point of contention.

26. The unbelievable inability to respond correctly to sarcasm here is scary
People, the guy was making a totally sarcastic point:

Think Jon Stewart saying something completely outrageous
to make a point in just the opposite direction.

I can't believe how something this transparently humorous
was immediately engulfed by the Clark/Dean flame war.

Wake up, people. The enemy is Bush, not the other democrats.

that northern voters will vote for a candidate, regardless of where they live. The southern voters won't. I think everybody already knew that.

while the reverse of it does seem to be true. Of course, the Crawford Cretin might cure the south of voting for southerners, by the time he's through.
