"I never said Sadaam Hussein was a danger" -- Liasson's NPR report on Dems
Edited on Thu Dec-11-03 07:52 PM by AP
Did anyone hear that quote tonight on Mara Liasson's story at about 38 minutes into the hour about the campaign.

Although the entire story was about how everyone's gunning for one particular candidate (starting with a long John Kerry segment), there was a brief moment when that one particular candidate was quoted as saying "at least I never said that Sadaam Hussein was a danger."

I heard that I though, man, that's a quote that could come back to haunt you.

Then Liasson played a couple months old quote of that particular candidate, for whom everyone is gunning according to Liasson, saying that he thought Hussein was a danger. Woops. I guess the past can come back and haunt you. At least he's covered all the bases.

After that interlude, Liasson went right back to definining the whole campaign as revolving around that one certain candidate, with the inevitable dismissals of the other candidates' viability. (For Edwards, she said that he had a group of supporters at an event, but they were all high school students assigned to campaign for him.)

Now, I'm not trying to bash anyone. However, I think it's important to discuss what they're saying on NPR, since 11 million people will probably have heard that story by the end of the day today, and it reveals what Mara Liasson, and Fox and NPR all think about this campaign.

So, anyone else hear this story?

Comments? Questions?

National rePublican Radio
I don't listen to them now that they see and acknowledge who their daddy warbucks is. And Terri Gross can go fuck herself for sliming the antiWar movement. I'll take Pacifica.

1. I'm sorry I missed it
But I'm quickly coming to the realization that statements rarely come back to haunt you. I do think it's noteworthy, but I doubt anyone else will.

By the way, what a FANTASTIC pic of Edwards!

2. Funny...
... I don't remember NPR covering the numerous inconsistencies in Bush* statements during the 2000 campaign.

And people wonder why I say NPR is a lost cause.

They are already running our man down. How many stories critical, really critical of Bush do you think you will hear on NPR next year. Yeah, you can count them on a half a hand.

15. Heard them raving about him and the wonderful Tax Cut passing
the morning after the vote... they didn't state that it was close, nor that there was controversy around it... that the IMF had recently sent a warning about US fiscal policy and that the passage did the opposite of what the IMF suggested (has the IMF ever given a "first world nation" a fiscal warning before???) Then... they quickly added that there was a little noticed aspect - that there was no tax cut whatsoever for lower income families.

Not the first time there was a report that was unflinchingly spouting the republican/bush line with no balance in the content.

9. A don't expect them to start. Nonetheless, more people listen to NPR
than listen to, I believe, all three network news broadcasts each day.

They really determine public opinion for a VERY CRUCIAL demographic -- middle class and soccer moms.

11. Is that a head in the sand?
AP you are so tuned in! As you know, since I complained to NPR, the told me not to listen anymore, and to never contribute again.

I'll forward the email anytime.

Hey_ it is more than just that one quote. First, we know that they will actually lie. I mean really lie, not just take things out of contex. Oh sure, they will do that to. The problem for the Dems. is that they won't have to do much of anything to find the red meat.

The other problem is that the resume is thin, too thin to hold up.

I have no other comments, but will return later to see how you are doing.

20. They're playing it already. Geez, Rove must be VERY confident Dean is
the nominee.

The whole Dem party is going to be hung by Dean's bullshit that so many of us have noticed for almost a year now.

24. hey...I sure don't see Dean beating Bush. Not anymore.
Not since the 87 billion for Iraq passed. That 87 billion was Bush's election money, imo.

Read my thread on the Iraqi symphony and you'll see what I mean.

17. Mysteriously undocumented
I heard the piece. She was referring to a statement Dean supposedly made on Meet the Press some time ago, that Hussein was a threat to the US. There was no context for Dean's earlier statement, of course. There was no audio provided. I would have liked to hear the question and complete answer she referred to.

This was the first of many hit pieces on democrats that NPR will be airing over the next eleven months.

I think it is noteworthy that Liasson (or NPR, for that matter) has never done a piece on any of the innumerable lies, distortions and crimes of the Bush cabal. They could start, for example, with these questions.

19. Dean said Saddam didn't pose an IMMINENT threat to the US
That's been his whole position all along and why he didn't want us going into Iraq.

He said Iraq was a threat, but not imminent.

It's refreshing to see the anti-Dean hit squads strive for accuracy.

Just a "grave and gaterhing" danger and the "most serious threat."

It's sad when one must resort to becoming a Bush apologist as the last resort for promoting their candidate.
