Mark Halperin: Dean too "culturally secular" to win against Bush
Halperin of ABC is in a panel discussion in NH live on CSPAN.
It was a general satement about Dean, and as an example he referenced Dean's quote on "God, guns and gays".

Discuss.

3. No.
The Bible belters aren't the majority - they're just the loudest (and most obnoxious).

4. You win!
The award for clear thinking on DU - 12/12/03!

Exactly right - the thumpers are very, very loud - not the majority.

7. Agreed
Which is why Dean's ability to energize the Democratic base is so important. We need to drown out the fundies.

6. What in heck does that mean anyway?
"Culturally secular"?

Made up term to describe something that is too abstract to worry about.

9. I meet plenty of people concerned with....
...the growing influence over religious showmanship over politics. I don't think it's a minority sentiment, especially after having had to deal with blowback from lots of religious extremist regimes...

10. I just watched it and was going to post. He said ALL the Dem Candidates
Edited on Fri Dec-12-03 02:10 PM by KoKo01
Were not religious enough in the way that Clinton could be and that would mean they would have a problem being elected! He mentioned Dean as the "frontrunner" but went on to include ALL the Dem candidates. Another reporter said that New Englanders didn't "wear their religion on their sleeve!"

On Edit: He seemed totally convinced about Dems not having "religious values the way George Bush does."

I think this is a shocking statement and I will not read THE NOTE again.
I had stopped reading it, anyway so that's not a big deal but his bias is startling! As if being a RW Born again Christian is the only factor in becoming President. Isn't Halperin Jewish? Why would he be so thrilled about supporting RW Christians?

12. don't give a rats ass for this guys opinion
he is one of the people who write the NOTE on ABC defending the decision to cut off coverage for DK. These pundits think they are so smart but when you come down to it--they are wrong alot of the time.

13. Who Came Up With That Weird Term? It is a loser. n/t

How about "too human" to win......or "too American" or "too honest to win"----start spreading the word.
