Big Brother is here: Arizona schools install facial scan system
this scares me . . . how far are we going to take this security fetish that this country seems to have embarked on? . . .

Dec. 12, 2003 | PHOENIX (AP) -- Face-scanning technology designed to recognize registered sex offenders and missing children has been installed in a Phoenix school in a pilot project that some law enforcement and education officials hope to expand.

Two cameras, which are expected to be operational next week, will scan faces of people who enter the office at Royal Palm Middle School. They are linked to state and national databases of sex offenders, missing children and alleged abductors.

An officer will be dispatched to the school in the event of a possible match, said Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

"If it works one time, locates one missing child or saves a child from a sexual attack, I feel it's worth it," said Arpaio, a tough-talking sheriff who has previously gained notoriety for his chain gangs and prison-issued pink underwear.

1. I'm not sure how I feel about this yet
As a mother , I feel the missing child part is important .
I'm conflicted I guess . Cause I don't like big brother
but really want to keep our children safe .

2. You are being play a fool
Tampa and other cities have PULL this because it does not work Tampa did not stop one person with theirs.

But they are playing on "kids" to make millions. Who will say no to protecting "kids". And oh by the way it will cost 250,000 per school. I made up the number. But it will not be cheap.

7. Thanks for that link
It sounds like the concerns raised are
about flaws with software and false matches etc.

Understandable complaints I wouldn't want a system
flawed as such in schools .

5. Arpaio
It figures, Joe Arpaio's name popped up in this article. Why does that not surprise me? Arpaio's the Huey Long of Arizona - or at least he wants to be when he grows up.

8. "If it works one time..."
What a bunch of clowns.

It's the false alarms that keep this sort of system from working.

If I was the sheriff I'd write up the contract so the scam company would pay one hundred dollars for the first false alarm, and double the fine for every false alarm thereafter. One, two, four, eight, sixteen hundred dollars... pretty soon it will be some real money.

They'll need it to handle all the lawsuits.
