I've noticed a number of Canadians on Democratic Underground. I think they add a LOT to this forum, and I'm planning on adding a lot of information about Canada to some of my websites.
So I wondered if anyone could recommend some good Canadian political chatboards, forums or newsgroups. I'd also like to get a list of Canadian activist groups - primarily groups that are dedicated to keeping George W. Bush at bay. I'd even be interested in checking out groups that are downright anti-American.
Some time ago, I e-mailed Linux user groups across America in an attempt to network with people interested in fighting Microsoft. I was overwhelmed by the apathy and even antagonism I encountered. I think the best communication I ever got from a Linux user group was from a Canadian organization.
And since the ads were pulled from my websites - apparently because I criticized George Bush shortly after 9/11 - I'm going to try to find Canadian companies that would be interested in advertising on my sites, especially companies like Canadian pharmaceuticals, Qibla Cola - anything that might run Republicans the wrong way.
I also note that Canadians have an election coming up in May. Wouldn't it be cool if George Bush was a major campaign issue and candidates called him names like "moron" and "Hitler"? Such a campaign could very well have a major bearing on our own pathetic presidential campaign.
Finally, I started a thread last night to discuss the latest Canada-bashing piece from the Seattle tabloid that endorsed George W. Bush, the Seattle Times. For those who missed it, the column is "Think Canada's the place to be? Think again" by Canadian expatriate Jennifer Meeks, at
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/opinion/2001812740_meeks12.htmlHere are some of the more blatant examples of propaganda in her hit piece:
"Ever wonder why you see so many rusty cars up north? It's not just because they salt the roads in the wintertime. People can't afford new ones."
"Our standard of living is beyond what we could have ever achieved in a lifetime living in Canada. Our relatives can't believe how well average, middle-class Americans live. Our son, who has a learning disability, is getting the best education ever in an American public school."
Reality Check: I worked for the Seattle School District for sixteen years, and I can tell you why Seattle boasts the smallest per capita enrollment in public schools than any other large U.S. city except perhaps Honolulu. Between the Seattle School Board, the Seattle teachers union, the Green Party of Seattle and Bill Gates, it's an open sewer.
"Meanwhile, it is the norm for Canadian schools to have at least 40 kids per class — that is, if the teachers are not on strike."
Seattle teachers seldom strike because they get no leadership from their union; when they do strike, it's a joke. If Canadian teachers really strike, then good for them!
"Political oppression — Imagine an American president and one political party in power for over 10 years. That's what's happened in Canada. Prime Minister Jean Chrétien's regime has been in control for more than a decade and the average Canadian is fed up and glad to see him go. Even then, it was his decision to allow an election. Hopefully, Canada will be able to make amends and repair its relationship with the U.S."
Why do Canadians need to make amends???
Here's the strangest comment of all:
"Living in Canada made me feel like a barn animal in George Orwell's "Animal Farm." My only worry is that someday the United States will resemble Canada. Sort of like one giant Seattle. That would be my nightmare."
Reading between the lines, I THOUGHT she said she hates Canada but loves Seattle, yet she's afraid the United States might become "one giant Seattle"? What's this lady smoking?
