Why John Kerry
Here's an email I sent out to friends about why I support John Kerry. Some of you may find it compelling, others may not.

Either way, have a great weekend!

I hope the holiday season finds you in good spirits. We have a great deal to be thankful for – adequate water, food and shelter, Conan O'Brien, NPR, New York City, and of course – each other.

2004 is approaching and I think it's going to be a great year. If for nothing else, we'll have the chance to vote and boot out our illegitimate inept commander-in-chief after the worst four-year term in U.S. history. If you don't believe me, do a google search on "miserable failure" and see what shows up. We'll have the chance to change the direction of this country's domestic and foreign policy, to bring peace and justice to other parts of the world, and to be a respected nation once again.

Regardless of whether you're a Democrat, Republican, or Independent, you should be concerned about the mess Dubya has caused. We've got a growing budget deficit (over $500 billion), an unjustified no-end-in-sight war, few nations we can call when in need of comfort, over 40 million Americans without healthcare, rising poverty levels (over 30 million), worsening environmental conditions, growing trade deficits with developing countries, and growing racial intolerance. To make matters worse, Britney Spears still makes music and Michael Jackson still sleeps with little boys.

But not all is doom and gloom. There are several candidates running for president who have solutions to these problems. Even those not running – Oprah Winfrey, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, and Michael Moore – have good ideas. Of those running, John Kerry is the most qualified to be president. He is also the candidate with the best chance of sending Dubya back to Mars. Here are a few reasons why:

Character – John Kerry fought in Vietnam, but more importantly, he came back and led the fight to end it. He saw the death and destruction war leads to first hand and stood up against the Nixon to put an end to it. A book on his Vietnam experience will be released in January but here's an excerpt - http://www.johnkerry.com/pressroom/clips/news_2003_1119a.html.

Since then, he's been one of the most progressive senators in Congress. Perhaps not as progressive as Ted Kennedy, but Kerry has done a considerable amount to improve foreign relations and living standards for millions around the world. He's also the only candidate running that hasn't accepted PAC (Political Action Committee) funding in any of his campaigns. That means he hasn't depended on special interest groups for support.

Record – During Kerry's 18 years as U.S. Senator, he's been a staunch supporter and activist on issues we feel strongly about – the environment, civil rights, workers rights, free (and fair) trade, gun control, women's rights, and education. He gets the highest marks among candidates from the League of Conservation for his environmental record and gets a 0% from the NRA (National Rifle Association). For more on his record, click here http://www.vote-smart.org/issue_rating_category.php?can_id=S0421103

Solutions – Kerry has realistic, common sense solutions to issues that affect us all. His alternative energy plan would remove our dependency on fossil fuel oil in 10 years. That means all those big fat cats in the oil and gas industries will be out of work and our dependency on Middle East oil will virtually disappear. He'll provide affordable health care to all, with the government footing the bill on costly operations that would otherwise be unaffordable. He'll go to the UN and to leaders around the world and mend relationships that have been tarnished by the current administration. Go to http://www.johnkerry.com/issues/ to learn about more of his solutions.

Vision – Like Bill Clinton, John Kerry understands the complexities of this world, He doesn't see it as Black or White, my way or the highway. He lives in the gray, like most of us. His statesman like approach to diplomacy will help unite this country and the world and take us to a better place. Kerry's ideas and words carry substance, based on experience and a global mindset.

Some of you may have noticed the media trying to make your minds up for you. With the recent Gore announcement, they've assumed a Dean vs. Bush election with Bush winning. Well, they're half-right – If Dean wins the primary, Bush will win the election. But they're ABSOLUTELY WRONG in believing that Dean is going to win the nomination. Not a single vote has been cast. Don't let the media pundits decide for you!

Here's what I'd like for you to take away from this email –
- Please please vote in 2004's election (unless it's for Shrub)
- Please consider John Kerry for president. Get informed by visiting http://www.johnkerry.com
- If you think he's the one, tell everyone you know. And get involved in the campaign
- And, if possible, please contribute some $$$. Beating George Bush and his corrupt thugs is going to be tough. Kerry needs all the financial support he can get.

Enjoy the holidays and have a great new year's. See you soon!

1. Thank you for posting this letter
I wish to find out more about Kerry's environmental platform. I thought I was up on political things, but I don't remember seeing anything about this before.

4. Kerry is THE environmental candidate
It's astonishing to me that Kerry's OUTSTANDING evironmental record would be news to anyone. He's been called "an evironmental hero" by the League of Conservation Voters, has been endorsed by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and also receives rave reviews from the Sierra Club. He's been THE leader in the Senate on environmental issues, most recently in the battle to stop the drilling in ANWR. If the environment is important to you, John Kerry should be your candidate.

5. Kerry seems a REAL TREASURE for us all: Dean/Kerry??

I have reading up on John Kerry recently and he seems to have led an incredible life of integrity and service. I have never come across another political biography with more nobility.

I hope Kerry does not attack our guy too much cuz it would be great for the two of them to team-up after the primaries.

I have been thinking about it a lot, and KERRY COMPLEMENTS DEAN big time. I am mulling over posting my thoughts on that after I think about it more.

2. After the last debate
Kerry really seems head and shoulder above the rest in terms of the environment. I hope whoever the enventual nominee is really sticks it to Bush on clean air, clean water and MTBE contimination. These issues would be huge for the democratic party. Hopefully, the candidate won't stay silent out of deference to corporate interests.

3. Great letter. "Don't send them a message, send them a President!"
That president is John Kerry. His lifetime record fighting for liberal causes speaks volumes.

It is past time we had another Senator from Massachusetts elected to the presidency.

6. I try to remain agnostic as possible
Edited on Sat Dec-13-03 12:53 PM by Sliverofhope
But, seeing as defeating Dubya is like a chess game, I think it would be horrible if Kerry were to go down in flames too soon. Put me in his column for now. I know, it's not a ringing endorsement, but I think he should be in the top echelon of survivors.

9. Kerry let us down on the IWR and the patriot act
... and let's face it - much of the credit for Kerry's environmental record should go to the voters of MA, the people who put him in a position to do those things. the same voters who according to recent polls, are favoring Dean over Kerry.

16. Re: the PATRIOT ACT
IMHO, I think it's unfair to blame him for voting for the PATRIOT ACT. Let's face it- everyone was scared and nervous and passed it without reading it. Not just Kerry's fault. The nation was stunned, and Bush Inc. took advantage of that.
I know, I'm pissed he voted for it too...but he regrets it and will repeal it when elected.
Aside from IWR, he has the best enviromental record (According to an enviromentalist I talked to in Boston) of any senator.
Kerry's got his flaws, but he won't let us down again....IMHO.

11. Kerry/Triumph Ticket?
I'd love to see the VP debate - a puppet master getting beat by a puppet.

Kerry's message is exactly what I want to see in a primary! Sell yourself as a president - not a nominee. That's the job you're asking for.

the subject of her running in 2008 OR 2012. Edwards would be the likely 2012 Dem candidate and he can choose a woman for Veep.

We can surely use some dixie votes.
