Congressman Elijah Cummings of Maryland Endorses Dean for President
Chair of Congressional Black Caucus will serve on Dean Campaign's top national steering committee

ATLANTA--Congressman Elijah E. Cummings today endorsed Governor Howard Dean, M.D., citing Dean's commitment to creating well-paying jobs; assuring that all Americans receive high-quality, affordable health care; guaranteeing an empowering public education to all children, advancing the civil rights of all Americans and restoring America's security and moral credibility around the world.

"These are difficult and dangerous times for all Americans," Congressman Cummings declared. "These are times that cry out for a president of strength, moral conviction and balance -- a president who will lead us in doing what must be done to defend our country while we also affirm the fundamental moral principles that bind us together as a nation. I am convinced that Governor Dean will be that president; and, today, I strongly endorse his candidacy."

Congressman Cummings, who chairs the 39-member Congressional Black Caucus that represents more than 26 million Americans, emphasized that his decision to endorse and support Governor Dean is one that he has reached as an individual.

In response to CBC Chairman Cummings' strong endorsement of his candidacy, Governor Dean said, "Congressman Cummings is a great leader and an eloquent representative of all Americans, including the African-American community. His addition to our campaign strengthens the broad coalition that we are building--one American at a time--all across this country. I am proud that Elijah Cummings has joined the hundreds of thousands of Americans who are determined to take their country back. I look forward to working with him as we continue to grow the greatest grassroots campaign presidential politics has ever seen.

"Chairman Cummings will be an important addition to the campaign, serving as a national spokesperson on critical issues such as health care, education, jobs and urban revitalization," Governor Dean continued. "Chairman Cummings also will serve as a key member of the Dean for America National Steering Committee."

"During our campaign, and as president, I am going to work with Elijah Cummings and leaders of all communities and all races to re-engage the tens of millions of Americans who have lost interest in politics because the system has stopped working for them. Chairman Cummings's passion and dedication are a true reflection of what this campaign is all about," Governor Dean concluded. "Working together, we can take our country back."

Since winning a special election in April 1996, Congressman Cummings has represented Maryland's 7th Congressional District, which includes portions of Baltimore City, Baltimore County and Howard County.

Congressman Cummings joins Reps. Neil Abercrombie, Joseph Crowley, Bob Filner, Raúl Grijalva, Maurice Hinchey, Jesse Jackson, Jr., Sheila Jackson-Lee, Zoe Lofgren, Jim McDermott, Jerrold Nadler, Major Owens, Frank Pallone, Tim Ryan, Loretta Sanchez, Robert C. "Bobby" Scott, Nydia M. Velázquez and David Wu, in addition to Vermont Senator Patrick J. Leahy, who already have endorsed Governor Dean.
