I woke up just to hear the news announced about SH and they followed with a special "Talking Points." The guest "expert" was an Arab, but not Iraqi. As the hour played out, I began to suspect he was a US-Saudi "expert." Only in passing did he mention how with SH gone, the focus on fighting could now be against the US. It was like an after thought.
A man from Egypt called and questioned the timing and circumstances of the capture, wondering if SH had been held for a while and was being caught now for political reason in the US. The "expert" said that Egyptians had a way of thinking, how typical of them! I was taken aback at this comment!
An American from Mass. called the whole Iraq thing a "head fake" which I thought was very good. He wondered about the whole WMD thing.
The expert tried to gloss over the issue.
It had taken another caller to mention how a trial might be embarrasing for the US since we had supported SH. A rights worker was talking about a trial and about the evidence about Hussein, but said the main thrust would be his "war crimes"....which made me think, we sure won't see anything about Saddam being our boy over here.
One Iraqi called from Norway, saying great, but what about water, electricity and health services and saying things had gotten much worse.
It took another caller to say that while one group might be fighting for SH, there were many other groups who were fighting the US--all the army, civil service workers, etc who were fired and were unemployed and suffering.
Not once during the whole hour did I hear any mention of other groups that have come into Iraq.
The whole hour, I felt, was largely geared to the issue of a trial, death vs imprisonment and the mechanisms of all that. The occasional astute caller managed to get through and bring up some of the nitty gritty of continued problems on the ground...and the "expert" didn't seem to want to get involved with them too deeply!!!
