Saddam will die before he goes to trial.
Shot him trying to escape. Kidney failure. Bludgeoned by a fellow inmate. You name it.

You really think they'll let him get up in front of the world and spill the beans? Imagine how embarrased April Glaspie will be.

1. I doubt it
Just like how the videos released of POWs captured by the Iraqi's gave them a measure of guarantee that they would be kept alive, I think the public acknowledgement that we have Saddam means we will keep him alive. They have to know it would be a major PR crisis if he died.

And they're really not that stupid. Think your enemy evil if you must, but never think they stupid, lest you underestimate them. Rove is anything but stupid. He knows it would cause an international flap and endanger Bush's reelection chances. The last thing he needs is more ruffled international waters, especially if Bush is hoping for international aid to bail him out of Iraq.

9. I got 5 bucks that says you're wrong. Saddam will see trial
I think it's about 50-50 that his trial will be before an all-US/UK body of jurists. But if Bush throws Saddam to the same court that's trying Milosevic, Rove's a genius.

The strange and convenient death of J. Clifford Baxter—Enron executive found shot to death
By Patrick Martin
28 January 2002
(snip)
The most disturbing account of Baxter’s last days comes from a former business associate who spoke to the New York Times but was not identified by the newspaper. This person spoke with the former Enron vice chairman two days before his death and congratulated him “for being named among those people who complained about Enron.”

According to the Times account, the unnamed associate added that Baxter “was talking about perhaps needing a bodyguard, though I’m not sure where that idea came from.”

That a man only two days away from suicide would be considering hiring a bodyguard defies belief. But neither the Times nor any other media outlet has raised the possibility that Baxter felt his life to be in danger because of what he knew and could divulge about the internal affairs of Enron. Men have been killed for much less.

I would not be the least bit surprised.

5. Trial?
The only trial he'll get will be in a military tribunal that's closed to the public.

7. Yep
they will keep him alive so they can parade him around. He will never get a chance to speak freely about anything, so he is no threat.

8. I think you are correct...
We haven't heard from Noriega yet nor have we heard from the Kennedy assassins or the supposed "insurgents" from Grenada. Then there was Oswald... I think we could go on and on and on....

10. Agree UNLESS
the Bushies figure out a way to completely control the process and score massive PR points in the Fall just before the election.

If they think he is in any way a liability - poof! (Killed by Osama no doubt.)

11. first he will publicly announce he had WMD's on TV
we won't see the guns off camera trained at his head either literally or metaphorically. He will call upon Syria to give up on trying to hide the weapons for him anymore or else the USA will come a knockin'.

He will implore Iraqis to stop killing Americans for a futile cause. They should "get over it" and move toward a democracy of Halliburton's making.

Then he will trip and fall down three flights of stairs. End of Saddam.

Or he'll choke on a pretzel.

15. The thing you have to worry about
is if Saddam cuts a deal with bush*, easy conditions in prison, assured safety of wives and kids, in exchange for saying the right things at his trial, how he was making WMD etc, etc.

17. In the Show Trials under Stalin
The defendants all said that they were traitors working to bring down the government because if they didn't their families would have been killed.

18. while it would not surprize me at all, I doubt it
they can manage anything he says or doesn't say easily enough so that doesn't concern me.

However if he should be unwilling to chat, an untimely demise is a terrific way to free the interrogation people to further convince him to be more forthcomng with information.

WMD or not, you know he is a goldmine of information regarding his neighbors. Its worth it for that alone.
