Senator Edwards' Statement on Capture of Saddam

Senator John Edwards (D-NC) released the following statement today:

"Today, every American and people all over the world are waking up to the good news that Saddam Hussein is no longer free. But no citizens are happier to learn of his capture than the Iraqi people who endured his torture and oppression for decades. They have been waiting to hear of his demise and we are all grateful that they finally received this welcomed news.

"Since last March our men and women in uniform have been working with courage and commitment to help the Iraqi people create the country of their dreams: one that is free, democratic, and free from Saddam Hussein's terrible reign. We are all so proud of their efforts not just today, but every day as they work tirelessly to bring democracy to Iraq.

"Our military leaders have accomplished a great success. I hope President Bush will use this opportunity to chart a course in Iraq that will bring in our allies in a meaningful way to achieve a democratic and peaceful Iraq."

Senator Edwards will give a major foreign policy address in Des Moines at 10:00 AM tomorrow morning.

7. I hear ya - it's a symptom of the times we live in that great candidates

like Edwards get "lost in the shuffle"

I've always thought that a Clark/Edwards, Edwards/Clark ticket would be incredible...

9. you know, I'm getting more excited every day about his chances

remember, we're still weeks out from voting and there is still much that can change.

Take this Hussein capture, it hurts Dean and Clark. It removes a lot of the impatus they've been driving with lately.

More significantly, the gaffs these two have been giving non-stop are catching up with them and I really believe will sink them at just about the right time. If the sink is not total it will be suffieciently undersay to render this more of a fight than people believe right now. I really believe tha the top two have peaked and the steady, charismatic, issues-centric and statesmanlike Edwards is going to start looking a lot better to people.

Obviously many will get a good chuckle out of this but they might want to think back 4 years ago. Its not like there isn't precident.

I've always thought that if he can win the SC primary he could get the momentum he needs...

14. I think this is a real possibility.

And I think the biggest evidence that it's the case is because it's SO obvious, yet none of the media addresses it. It's hard to find any of those pieces which puff up Dean, or tear down Kerry state that there's a very clear possibility that the person leading SC today is going to win it and change the whole tone of the race.

but, of course, it really shoudn't be a shock, because he leads in SC and is a great communicator with a strong message.

He continues to impress me more and more every day.

When all is said and done, I think his positive message and focus on the issues (both domestic and foreign) will eventually draw people to him.

there isn't quite the media blackout on him that there usually is and they see that Howie and Wes don't have legs.

I think we can count on the super delegate's support if its even needed at that point.

it would have been great if he had called for an accelerated withdrawal from the place, but otherwise it was a-ok

8. I don't think even Kucinich believes in an accelarated withdrawal.

However, both of them believe that the American face needs to come off the operation and that the UN and a multi-nation coalition needs to transfer the coutnry to the hands of Iraqis.

12. I met him last night in L.A.

He gave a great speech, and acknowledged to me that Elizabeth reads D.U. when I shook his hand afterward. He's just what I'd expected: warm, sincere, approachable and electric. The crowd loved him, and it was a great show, started by comedian Paton Oswald, followed by a speech, and then capped off by a short set from Tenacious D; the show was at Fais Do Do.

Mr. Bush has no intention of allowing any democracy in Iraq. A little stronger statement suggesting what is wrong with Bush's policy would be in order.

19. this is the WRONG forum for that, this phrase was masterful

as it sets an objective that noone can fail to support in the midst of a positive message.

Dean might have shown his ass, as they say, by saying something of that nature.
