Russert at Rummy's X-mas Party.... talking about Saddam on Saturday.. WTF
For 14 Long Hours, Keeping the Secret

By Mike Allen and Bradley Graham
Washington Post Staff Writers
Monday, December 15, 2003; Page A01

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld spoke guardedly when he called President Bush at Camp David at 3:15 p.m. Saturday, with the bombshell that Saddam Hussein apparently was in custody after a fruitless eight-month search that had tormented the White House.

Bush returned from Camp David by helicopter, as previously planned, arriving at the White House at 7:20. Cheney also returned to Washington and went to a holiday party at Rumsfeld's house along with other administration officials.

At the party, Tim Russert of NBC News told Tenet he had had a dream the night before that the United States had captured Hussein. "Happy holidays, Tim," Tenet replied, according to Russert's on-air account yesterday morning.

Rumsfeld was less cagey when he arrived at a Christmas party at the home of Air Force Gen. Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Rumsfeld swept past a receiving line of guests waiting to greet Myers and his wife, Mary Jo Myers, and said he needed a "secure phone," which he used to place a call to a top aide about the Hussein situation.

5. He was at
Rummy's Christmas party. Chummy. Makes it kind of hard to call him on his lies when you've eaten off his china and used his bathroom, unless you're not an ass-kisser. But if Russert weren't an ass-kisser, he wouldn't have been invited in the first place.

That's the problem.

If these Washington "journalists" actually get up enough backbone to do thier job & ask difficult and unpleasant questions of those in power THEY WON'T BE INVITED TO ANY NICE PARTIES ANYMORE!

3. This is the way it's always been...
"journalists" have always been toadies to the powerful. Woodward and Bernstein were an anomaly. They actually believed in the role of journalists as investigators, digging and revealing truth. Though, they too were being played by a powerful person (Deep Throat) who wanted to bring down Nixon. (Just look at Woodward now--toady to the Bush junta.)

6. That Russert remark is just plain weird
Did not anybody at WaPo edit that article? The Russert remark is meant to imply that the capture was leaked to Russert by the White House. What bothers me is that the paragraph just does not fit into the flow of the article.

8. I thought Condi broke the news to *
WASHINGTON - When national security adviser Condoleezza Rice (news - web sites) told President Bush (news - web sites) before dawn Sunday that Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) had indeed been captured, she was delivering news that was good for the U.S. leader in a multitude of ways.

not that it means a hill of beans ... a script is a script

I can see G.E. Russert's eyes glistening at such an advanced word.

10. Rummie told W on Saturday
that they might have Saddam. Condi woke W up on Sunday AM to tell him that they had Saddam. What I would like to know is why is Condi waking W up. Isn't that Laura's job? From the way they made it sound, you would think that Condi lives in the WH.
