Implications of SH's capture for US foreign policy (Ignatieff)

David Ignatieff on the Connection. Poor guy got most of his interview pre-empted by the press conference.

But he said something important at the end: "The story that needs to be told is not just the story of Saddam Hussein, but the long and dark history of American complicity with the Hussein regime." (Not an exact quote.)

With the capture of Saddam, American needs to take the time to ask itself serious questions.

Yes, he was an evil man. But how did he grasp power, and maintain it? Yes, he committed genocide, and had one of the worst records of human rights abuses ever. But where was the U.S. then?

If the U.S. has the right to unilaterally invade a country and depose its dictator because he is a tyrant, does it also have the responsibility to do it? What direction is our current foreign policy leading?
