If Saddam is considered a POW, then why are we parading around videos of
him in custody getting a check-up? I remember seeing a post last night with a source stating that Rummy would clasify Saddam as a Prisoner of War. If that is the case, then why are parading video of him getting a medical and physical exam. Now, I understand that we need to show the world proff that this is Saddam, but I'm sure I heard many people ranting and raving that when the Iraqis showed our POWs on television being inteviewed, there was this huge outcry that Saddam had gone against the Geneva Convention, Article 2:
"To this end the following acts are and shall remain prohibited at any time and in any place whatsoever with respect to the above-mentioned persons: ... 3)Outrages upon personal dignity, in particular, humiliating and degrading treatment;"

Now, I don't like Saddam or anything, but shouldn't we be held to the same standards that we set for the enemy? Just wondering.

1. Yeah, and why am I seeing a guy on CNN/Zahn describing all the
sorts of "interrogation" techniques that will be used on him...and how in the end he will "be broken." He said "torture" is ill-defined in the Geneva accords...

I mean, isn't he a head of state? I don't get all this...

2. He's only "accorded the rights of" not Officially One
I think in Pentagonese international legal jargon that translates into "we'll treat him like a POW when it suits us and we'll do with him as we see fit otherwise."

Oh the tricky rhetorical hoops of legal jargon!

4. THis was discussed earlier today,
I think the response was that as a former head of state the rules are a little different, but the degrading footage that was aired was probably still prohibited.

But thats just my momory of a discussion, so take it for what it is worth.
