Norman back pedals on General Clark comment on CNBC
Was asked on CNBC about his comments about Clark. He said he was only repeating second hand information from General Shelton. He didn't know if it was true or not and said,"I said, if that's the case" meaning he didn't know if it was the case or not.

1. What do you know?
All of these assholes, when pressed even slightly to clarify their slams against Clark, immediately start backpedalling furiously. You gotta love that.

2. what backpeddle? Norman said "if that's the case" and was clear about it..
just because the media takes Norman out of context, doesn't mean you should blame the man...

3. he repeated
a smear against Clark, then admitted he had no idea if the smear was true. That's a less-than-honorable way for ANY man to act, especially a retired General.

4. He should have used
Ann Coulter's "It's a well-known fact" tactic. Millions of people seem to fall for that shit every time.

5. I saw him say it
i don't remember him qualifying it in any way, Norman sounded like he despised Clark.

6. Hearsay doesn't cease to be hearsay
Just because one prefaces hearsay with a disclaimer, that doesn't make it OK to go ahead and pass on damning accusations that you know nothing personally about and can't even comment intelligently on. That is the nature of a smear campaign, keep the smear in play by repeating it first second or third hand if necessary. Turn on a smoke machine because sooner or later some people might conclude that where there is smoke there is fire.

Having said that, I will give Norman some credit for clarifying his remarks, unlike Shelton.

11. Now Tom, I'm sure Norman was being a good little soldier...
And "just following orders" as he was during the Fla recount
when he helped steal the military absentee vote for the boss.

12. I wonder if Dan Rather will invite General Clark back to follow up.
DAN RATHER: "But somewhere along the line, Wesley Clark developed a reputation among some others -- Schwarzkopf, Shelton, Tommy Franks -- just something about Wesley Clark that tees me off. Has that been your experience?"

GEN. WESLEY CLARK: "Listen, Dan, I don't know if we can ever set aside gossip. What I learned in the military is that gossip starts early and it stays forever. And all you can do is do your best to be who you are and work through it. And I could give you example after example from the time I was a captain on where I heard about gossip.
...
And I guess the other thing I would say is this, Dan, the people that I worked for, that were responsible for advancing me, obviously thought enough of me to ensure that I was given increased responsibilities along the way."

Schwarzkopf, Shelton, Franks...
What do those three have in common?

14. Later on Bill Cohen looked
mad as hell but point blank refused to get involved in the discussion. No love lost between him and Clark, apparently. What a shame.

Norm really did a thorough backpedal, didn't he? He looked an awful lot like a guy who knew he had stepped over a real line and wanted to get back before the landmines went off. Put it all on Shelton and THEN he basically said, it's not really an issue to most people (I'm paraphrasing cause I only caught the thing in passing) He really looked like he wished that woman reporter had asked him something else.

What is it with her, anyway? Maybe she should check her medication. She acts like she is some sort of coquette and able to charm the big old teddybear into saying something he clearly didn't want to say. Her bodylanguage and expressions were, like, weird, dude.

I guess the best answer remains Clark's. If you want to know what Shelton is talking about, ask him.

15. I saw one other interview where he went further
saying something to the effect that he thought Wes would "do fine" or something like that as Prez.

I think they had a talk sometime. :-)

but the mud has already been slung. I'm sure he's very sorry for having repeated the Shelton lie. :eyes:
