Dean & Clark leading in South Carolina and Arizona
Survey USA has reports on its first two polls they have conducted in these early key states and indicates a close race between Howard Dean and Wesley Clark.

South Carolina

Dean: 21%
Clark 20%
Sharpton 15%
Edwards 15%
Gephardt 10%
Lieberman 5%
Braun 4%
Kerry 3%
Kucinich 1%
Undecided 7%

Arizona
Dean 31%
Clark 29%
Other 11%
Lieberman 10%
Gephardt 9%
Kerry 7%

The South Carolina numbers are especially good for Dean considering he is a Yankee from Vermont who is not supposed to do well in the south. Unless Edwards can take this state he is probably out of the race. Sharpton also is performing well in this state. If Clark does well here and in Oklahoma where is is leading he could present himself as the most viable alternative to Howard Dean for the nomination.

The Survey USA poll is the second poll this week to give Dean a lead in Arizona, but it is narrower than the 10-point lead that he had in a Northern Arizona University poll (NAU)which had Dean at 22% and Clark at 12%--with many more democrats undecided--39%.

2. not bad for a "fizzling" 3-month-old campaign
this is beginning to boil down to the Dean-Clark pissing match we were all promised as kids

and it really gives you a fuzzy feeling inside reading Sharpton's SC numbers compared to those of DWEEBERMAN

3. Clark's whole strategy is based on February 3rd

Show "better than expected" in New Hampshire and then win a "triple play" with South Carolina, Oklahoma and Arizona. Right now, that's looking very possible. The pattern seems to be shaping up that when Clark makes a media buy - his numbers go up. That doesn't always happen...but his "bio ad" is playing VERY well and the numbers look like the plan is working.

4. this is Dean's strategy too
particularly Arizona and New Mexico and doing better than expected (if not actually winning) South Carolina and Oklahoma. In the end I think it will come down to Dean and Clark.

6. ..and what a winning combination that will be!
Dean/Clark or Clark/Dean. Either way I'm happy. Although I really like Senator Graham, but he can either stay in the Senate as one of the few voices of reason, or have a cabinet post.
