Do You Think She is Sleeping?

A soldier of the U.S Army's 4th Infantry Division (Task Force Ironhorse) wraps a blanket over a sleeping Iraqi girl during a search of her house during a night raid in the town of Baquba in central Iraq, December 17, 2003. U.S. troops conducted the first raid in Baquba, targeting members of a suspected cell planning attacks on U.S.-led coalition forces, since Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s capture near Tikrit. 2. Yeah..................
after they kicked the door in and shouted orders to anyone inside, I'd say she's sound asleep.

7. Me, too!
The soldiers would knock quietly, then tiptoe into my room to make sure I was covered up after my mother let them in. Or so I'm told.

9. Puke yourself
I was attempting to find a suitably tasteless caption to match that
that was supplied to Reuters.

"... Task Force Ironhorse wraps a blanket over a sleeping Iraqi girl ..."
Awww, look ... they're really caring and considerate guys that
were fortunately captured on film by a passing photographer ...

Give me a break. One bloody photo-op after another.
No cameras around when they wiped out kids in the village the other day?
Drat, what bad luck!

"Just move slightly to the right ... yep ... that will mask the
gun of the guy behind you ... hey kid, I said LIE STILL ok?"

13. Really, all these made for primetime portrayals
of a heroic forces, cradling children and assisting the elderly cross the street, like some yankee boyscouts of goodwill, like the sisters of mercy and hope, like they're on a mission of peace and love from the bosom of Christ--and the saps who buy these manufactured images of decency, make me sick.

10. Read .9
"What you do think?" replied the little billy goat who then went
Clip, clop, clip, clop over the bridge to the green grass on the
other side.

If one were taking it seriously, one could also read up on old
news reports regarding interactions between male US soldiers and
young female host nationals near other bases around the world.

But I trust that you are not really taking it seriously.

11. It would help to use the word "sarcasm" in your post.
I understood where you were coming from, but folks get paranoid that some repub lurkers will use these kinds of posts against all Dems.

It is quite a sickening photo op and caption.

14. I don't know how to reply to you
and express how i feel about this statement without breaking the rules. My beloved nephew is in Iraq now and nobody gets much sleep around here. You should be ashamed of yourself. I'm willing to bet that if you and I were face to face, you wouldn't dare repeat what you said.

Despicable doesn't begin to describe you.

The "peek at her ..." was out of line and I was calling him on it. Sorry you did not understand my sarcasm and discust with the "peek" statement.

15. Where are her clothes?
It's freezing in Baghdad at night. This picture is very disturbing and does fit the caption. I'm not saying they're doing anything wrong, but it leaves too much to the imagination. Perhaps this is one photo that should not have been published.

17. She has on clothes, but
where are her parents?

If occupying soldiers bearing machine guns invaded my home in a nighttime raid, they would not be touching my children unless I was restrained somewhere in plastic handcuffs and a bag over my head, or dead.

The hypocrisy of these photo ops makes me ill. We have invaded their country and now we invade their homes at will. We take them into custody for interrogation whenever we want. We hold women and children hostage to get information about husbands and fathers so they can be arrested or killed. We demolish their houses and destroy their crops. If they happen to be on the wrong street at the wrong time, they get blown to bits by missiles or crushed by tanks, and we don't count the dear or even report what happened to them. We deny that we are to blame for the deaths and destruction.

In all likelihood, this soldier did attempt to cover the sleeping child with a blanket. In all likelihood, he does care that she might be cold. But to photograph the moment and broadcast it as propaganda, to attempt to spread the image that we are there as caring protectors, is disgusting.

18. A normal search of a house would include waking her
if you're searching for any objects at all - you'd have to check under the mattress.
