Hussein capture timed to hurt Dean?
I'm just speculating. But many on DU have talked this way in the past: BushCo understood Hussein's location and "moved in" when they wanted to.

After the Gore endorsement, everyone's freaking out about Dean. Could this have been timed to "take him out" early, Watergate style?

Like I said, I'm just speculating.

1. I said it once before
I have believed all along that at least one of the three following things would happen before the R National COnvention:

1. We catch/kill Saddam
2. We catch/kill Osama
3. Reagan passes away.

The sooner these things happen, the more time we have to fight back. But yeah, I think we knew Saddam wasn't leading the insurgence. I think we knew where he was. And yes, I think Bush waited until he needed a trump card and threw it. But it's good that it happened so early. He's running out of lifelines.

2. Actually..
I think Hussein was timed to give America a "Merry Christmas".

To ease our poor troubled hearts and let us spend easily as much money as we can on crap we don't need.

Plus, it looks like we are doing something. Like I said it is X-Mas. Lot's of families will be unhappy that Mom or Dad or Son or Daughter will not be home for the holiday. At least this way they are doing important stuff! :eyes:

That's my opinion anyway...

26. I agree: Xmas present for America
On Monday I heard on the NBC affiliate in the Champlain NY/VT region that retailers were hopeful that Saddam's capture would help boost holiday sales. They might as well have said that it's a great way to celebrate the birth of Lord and Savior, too.

4. Could be--I believe they had Saddam for a while, and they decided
to play it for as much as it's worth, and when it was politically expedient for them to do so--Dean was on a wave until this happened. I don't think this will hurt dean in the long run, but it did take his face off the front pages for a while.

5. Temporary. It will backfire just like "mission accomplished"
Iraq is about to erupt into armageddon. Civil war is starting and we are stuck hiding in bunkers in the middle of 24 million exceedingly pissed off Iraqis who have lots of guns, RPGs and mortars.

6. You're not alone.
Just got off the phone with an attorney friend and he said that in narcotics investigations the cops know where the suspect is long in advance of the arrest.

Why not do the same with Saddam?

8. Well, between the Saddam hysteria
Hillary's competing speech on foriegn policy and the media's efforts to mislead people as to what Dean was saying, I'd say he wound up in the middle of a political "perfect storm".

Let's hope he can stay afloat (but not TOO much afloat)

After all, I'm still for Clark ;^)

9. if that were the case
then they would consider Dean to be the largest threat in the general election. I tend to think they just got him when they did but they are certainly exploiting it for all they can.

12. Well, The Juxtaposition With Clark At The Hague Isn't Good For Junior
and as the Campaign goes on it WILL be there.

Frankly, I think Saddam was handed over alive on someone else's timetable... not Rove's.

Remember, initial word went out from Iran.

13. Anything Is Possible With These Guys...
As someone on some board said, why have we never seen any pictures of Saddam in that "spider hole" and there is no video of his capture, especially considering the Jessica Lynch rescue tapes. I think they take video along for everything. Could it be a screw-up that he wasn't killed?

32. actually..
I posted an article in another thread, it was from an embedded reporter in Iraq, and he said that for the record it was the Kurdish army who caught Hussein, not the US.

This story twists around just as much as the Jessica Lynch story.

14. As soon as Diane Sawyer said at the beginning of
her show last night - that this "interview" had been scheduled since early of last week - I think she said Tuesday - I thought ahhhhh, so THAT'S why they brought him in then - had to have a "love fest" for the interview. But who knows. We all have to question everything anymore.

15. They waited till they felt Dean was the shoe-in for nominee
and it was too late for the Dem party to adjust accordingly.

That way they further divide the party doing maximum damage to its partymembers who will be blamed for nominating such a weak general election candidate.

16. Last week's capture of Saddam DAYS after the Iraqi Tribunals...
were set up was just too obvious. Anyone paying attention has to know that is just TOO much of a coincidence.

As for the reason for the timing, the RW media heads were giggling with glee over the fact that Dean's foreign policy speech 'happened' to be scheduled days after the capture. I think it could very well be part of the timing decision.

18. Don't you think that would have demanded too many questions?
Edited on Wed Dec-17-03 11:43 AM by Junkdrawer
I mean days after the Iraqi tribunals were set up was bad enough, but that would have REALLY forced people to look into the timing.

As it is, it's perfect: Obvious enough that politicos are tempted to comment, not obvious enough to force mainstream examination.

23. If this was meant to "hurt" Dean, then we need more of it!
Dean has held steady or actually ROSE in most polls I've seen post-Saddam capture. To boot, the ultraslimey antiDean attack ads have swelled his coffers with more campaign money.

So my request of the antiDeans on both the Democratic and Repukelican sides? Bring it on, baby! Every stunt makes my guy more popular and flush with cash!

24. Too early
If they wanted it to hurt Dean, then they would have done it shortly after New Years. Face it, for the next three weeks, people are going to be preoccupied with the holidays, and the capture of Saddam isn't going to have much staying power. If they were specifically targetting Dean, they would have done it closer to the primaries, and when people would be paying attention.
