Gore's beard + Dean's tie + Kerry's hair = Democrats unfit for office

TIES THAT BIND

HOWARD Dean was fit to be tied yesterday after rumors swirled that the Democratic frontrunner wore a Maidstone Club necktie during Monday's foreign policy speech. Dean's parents were members of the snooty East Hampton country club, where minorities and Jews were excluded for decades, and reminding voters of his connection to it would seem risky. But upon closer examination, Dean's rep tie turned out to be decorated with Mallard ducks, not the Maidstone crest. "The only person who might attack him for wearing that tie would be Mr. Blackwell," quipped Dean spokesman Eric Schmeltzer. A Maidstone general manager said he was unsure if the club even sold ties.

1. Dean's foes, whoever they might be, have a strategy
aimed at "lighting him up." If Dean loses control in anger and says or does something that the opposition can use, all the better. In the meantime they will continue this petty little sniping to wear away at his image. Not really original as tactics go, but still effective.

Where it fails is in the fact, IMHO, that his opposition buys an image that Dean has created to sell his candidacy to the Democratic left in the primaries. A five term governor in a little state, who is also a doctor, is not likely to be any more truly hot-headed than your accountant.

If I'm right, then the GOP is attacking the wrong target by trying to provoke him.

And youse guys tink Rove is so schmart! Sheeesh.

7. uh-oh, mayhaps
There might be some sort of primal, subconscious allure to this (for people who are not I, heh). Like Peggy Noonan said, roughly, "Over is the era of the intellectual, in favor of that of the hero." I think we're moving backward into the realm of Platonic archetypes, and Bush, representing raw and dumb aggression, was the choice of a nation sensing impending doom. I think that's why the neo-cons were so desperate to get him into office. Not to sound like David Icke (or maybe so), but I sometimes think that affairs are being played out on metaphysical levels -- levels of which we are largely unaware.

3. God bless our press, for bringing us the vital, important info
though I admit the real national security issue is whether Dean wears boxers or briefs, and which groups of whiners will be offended by the answer

I expect a candidate whose underwear is suitable for public office, dammit!

woe is we...

6. if that's all they can find to pick on???
...they're pathetic and we're doing great. That's what they are trying to detract attention from - the issues. And we know the issues are not Gore's beard, Dean's tie....we've got bigger issues to worry about than that. Dems need to stay on message and repeat their message incessantly, ignoring the 'beard, tie' BS. Children will be children...and unfortunately right now, too many of them are in power and running loose at the mouth.
