Who's Going to be Time Magazine's Person of the Year?
Didn't do a poll because I can't think of any candidates. Something tells me they may select the chimp? What's your take?

Better looking than Shrub.

4. It's Supposed to Be The Person Responsible....
...for the most significant events in the year. In that regard, perhaps it should go to Saddam Hussein.

5. Remember: Time's MOTY is NOT an award for "Most honored".
It simply means, "Biggest Newsmaker", for good or ill. Hitler has been on the cover twice, as has Ayotollah Khoheimi (sp), and Kruchschev.

8. I'd say Dean has generated the most News
And he actually changed the whole tone of the news, too. It should definitely be Dean.

7. unfortunately Bush
I think TIME will say "the economy is roaring, he got prescription drugs, and we caught Saddam--everything is coming up roses."

Even looking over the fact that the economy is not roaring, prescription drug plan is a handout to the drug companies and HMO's, and Saddam's capture won't change much in Iraq.

13. I'd say Saddam, but they copped out in '01 and went with Guliani
and not Osama Bin Laden. (If I remember correctly, some advertisers and subscribers threatened to leave if OBL got the "honor.")

If they do it based on who's the biggest newsmaker, Saddam, no question.

If they go with who's the biggest newsmaker in a positive sense, Dean. Or, perhaps, the entire Democratic field (they sometimes go with groups -- last year, it was three women). I still think this would be weak.

If they cop out entirely, Bush.

A wild card -- I'd see this as pandering but not nearly as bad as choosing Bush: The soldiers in Iraq. Or the 4th ID and the special forces responsible for capturing Saddam.

Edited on Wed Dec-17-03 11:52 AM by RatTerrier
Maybe the two-faced version like Poppy got in '91.

Remember? 'Strong' (not my opinion) on international policy, weak on domestic issues?

Something regarding the dividing of the country, methinks.

Other bet would be the generic "US Soldier".

20. five men of the year
The "Queer Eye" guys. I've read so many pop-culture articles talking about how gays -- and issues relating to gays -- have been the big newsmakers this year.

But, since the war in Iraq has truly dominated the news, it could be a Bush-Saddam pairing, or "The American Soldier" or "The Iraqi Insurgent" or something like that.

Let's just keep our eyes on the Man of the Year 2004 prize ... and look to the day when it'll be the Democratic President-Elect's face on the cover!

For bravely dismissing the liberal candidates among the Democrats, leading the way in making the boundaries of acceptable political discourse safe for the mass media once again.

If they REALLY want to represent the big newsmaker(s) this year ... it'd be CELEBRITY LAWBREAKERS. Fill the cover with celebrity mugshots.

And they could sneak Der Gropenfuhrer in there, since he's a celebrity lawbreaker. And Rush.

24. No question..
..it should be Saddam.

The wingnut won't allow that, but he is responsible for most of the important events of 2003.

Even the shrub obsessed about him all year.
