Poll question: Have you lost your job since Bush took over?
With all of this talk of terrorism and Iraq, have we all forgotten about the economy? I was laid off from my job in july. I have still yet to find a permanent job. I have some temp jobs but they only go so far. I keep hearing that the economy is getting better and unemployment is going down. Oh really? Where is the talk of a jobless recovery? How did the unemployment figures do down, and why am I seeing more homeless people on the streets?

The poll is to see who has lost their jobs since Shrub's takeover of the country.

Thanks for polling!

John

College student. So, I don't really have a "job", as far as "career".

Not voting, but kick.

2. Yeah, but only because I retired.
Loving it here in Florida. Joined the local Democratic Committee and look forward to saying sayonara to all the Bushes.

Favorite bumper sticker: I didn't vote for Daddy, I didn't vote for Jeb and I sure as hell didn't vote for Dubya.

6. Actually, I've lost 3 jobs
One high paying career type job and 2 supposedly temp to perm type things that were only temp. The agencies know qualified people won't apply if they only advertise temp jobs so they lied to me then worked my ass off and let me go a week before I could file for unemployment if they laid me off. But what the hell, it's Christmas and they have jobs.

11. Two families in my child's class have had to move
Two families we know have had to move out of state. One moved to Georgia, the other to Maryland -- both due to "restructuring" and "outsourcing," etc., etc.

We live in a fairly affluent area -- 1.5 hrs. from NYC, 1 hr. from PHL.

Scary.

16. Not yet but management is trying hard....
I really don't blame bushlite on this but stupid management at work, these guys have forced out every good manager and introduced the new "value added" types who feel we are better off selling less but making more profits for their bonus's (but at some point you got to sell something...). We have lost over 100 employees and sadly the managers doing this all claim to be liberal types, you know fiscally conservative but socally liberal democrats which means they want everything the gov't can deliver but don't want to pay for it... Enough to make me puke... I've seen alot of nice people their jobs to these morons.

17. Yes
My lay-off was directly caused by Bush's tax plan. I worked for a company that financed low income housing and generated tax credits. Large businesses would buy low income housing in return for tax credits and the apartments were built by developers near the new housing. Once Bush eliminated dividend taxes, the large businesses had less of a need for tax credits. The end result was most of the employees in my former company are out of work, fewer jobs for developers and construction workers, and the poor don't have as many opportunities to live in safe affordable housing. It makes me sick when I hear how no one was going to be harmed by changing the dividend taxing structure.

I start a temp job tomorrow for less money and no benefits, but at least I'll be able to pay my rent.

22. "Have you lost your job since Bush took over?"
Yes, & I'm having an extremely difficult time finding another. I've never before had difficulty in finding a job. This lack of jobs is evidence that we've never really had a recovery; if we had, good jobs would've been created by now. We need an FDR-type president who will start a WPA to get people back to work.

I've witness dozens of people getting laid off for having "low accuracy" which means less than 98%. I work in IT. No one ever gets replaced yet we are never overloaded. We used to never get audited, and when we did, they were happy with 90%. I get the feeling they are just looking for excuses.

edit: In fact, 25 jobs this month gone. Right before Christmas. Our CEO is a local alumni and used to seem to care about the people here. I guess thats done. The amount of outsourcing and cross-work we do with India is far above the rate I imagine we'd need to stay competitive.

26. Job not lost, but had a whack in my pay
This of course was concurrent with a jump in property taxes. I was so much better off with Clinton in control than with the madman at the helm.

The dark cloud of Social Security privatization is hovering over us, but we can't save for our future because we're barely getting by, and then the bushies have the gall to tell us to frickin' spend to stimulate the economy.

This ain't America.

My empathy to those who are without jobs. I have been in your shoes.

but I sat on my rear for most of March and April 2001 after nearly two years of steady work as an independent contractor for a business development consulting firm. I finished a book I'm still trying to get published. Then I did a lot of scrounging and begging for work until last month, when I was offered full-time employment. They made me a great offer, and it seemed stupid to say no. Plus I was getting bored with no insurance and unpredictable paychecks and murderous self-employment taxes.

I've actually worked for this company since '92, so it's just my same old job. I'm happy to have it back! The only thing I'm gonna miss is the freedom to come and go as I please. The company is about half the size it was in 2000, thanks in large part to the Evil War Chimp. Business only started picking back up a couple months ago. A lot of people were laid off and/or took pay cuts in the time I was a contractor.

And half of the rest are under that threat. Ranges from grocery clerks, skilled & unionized industrial workers to IT jobs, everything is going down. But nobody I have met who is in management or executive positions is hurting, which is a lesson in itself:--as long as the bosses are doing ok, that means the economy is great.

Like myself. No,I can't be laid off or collect unemployment. But under this regime just like in the Reagan days work has slowed to a crawl. Last year in Jan/Feb I hardly worked--and no I don't work outdoors.

This tinkle down crap hurts all of us,when the economy slows down then the self-employed suffer also.
