What was his daughter fearful of? Why did she wait till today to come out of the closet?

1. Jungle fever sounds a bit like a racial slur
Was that your intention?

13. Thank you Jumper, I was trying to add some semi light hearted humor
to the board, instead I ruffle feathers....

The thought of a racist like Strom Thurman having jungle fever is hilarious to me.

The term jungle fever is used loosely in the black community, sorry if I offended some here.

Your view on that issue is held by a very small number of African-Americans...

Edited on Wed Dec-17-03 11:23 PM by nothingshocksmeanymo
humor translates poorly on message boards sometimes.

As far as the answer to the question is concerned, I am sure the woman was conflicted in many ways. No matter how vile he appeared to us, he was her father and she had to come to grips with that. She owes us no explanation for how she dealt with it...it was how she dealt with it.

On edit: and thanks to Doubles for the edit.

4. Thurmond's entire career was built on racism
If the truth about his daughter was revealed he would have been destroyed, at least if it was revealed prior to when he went "mainstream", and since he was very powerful he could have exacted significant retribution against her. She feared for her safety IMO.

5. God I hate the term "jungle fever" ... ugh...
She waited out of respect to her horrible father.

He is dead now and the reporters still kept coming after her.

Now she wants some closure and recognition.

8. My god I would edit that jungle thing.
It's very racist. I'm hoping you just weren't thinking and didn't mean it. On the other hand maybe Thurmond's daughter had KKK fever and preferred to keep her head intact on her shoulders. Think about it.

slaveowners often engaged in exactly this sort of thing.

As we now know from the descendents of Sally Hemmings etc. etc. etc.

We would be aghast. Just because someone says "Doubles" is not a racist doesn't mean "Doubles" has a free pass to post such trash.

Jungle Fever! UGH.

14. Doubles has one of the best records here on race
Doubles and I were the only ones who were crusading to get people to realize we need a more meritocratic system of picking candidates around the time of the LA gubernatorial election. Few people even read our threads on this important issue!

Economic justice, didn't you once get in trouble for a comment you made on race? I believe it was about affirmative action.

20. Not quite
If I did, I never knew I did! Check my posts....

I have mentioned my being black and really NOT LIKING Al Sharpton. Does that count me as someone who would "get in trouble"???

Also, honestly, it should NOT be ok to say things we would take offense to if it was said by someone we disagree with. I have lomg been angry at friends who use the N word...I don't care if you're black, white or green...it's not right.

29. I wasn't saying anybody was a RACIST!
I said it's WRONG to use racist language even if we are "joking around"......I don't think Doubles is a racist! My question originally was what if someone at Free Republic posted this with the "Jungle Fever" subject line? Would YOU not be outraged? If not, something is wrong. If you're saying it would be wrong there, but right here....that is worse. Using racist language is wrong EVERYWHERE and ALL THE TIME. but again, I reacted to the subject line (which has since been edited) NOT to Doubles personally. It was questioning judgment, not their real feelings.

35. My apologies
I was not familiar with your posts, was not accusing you of racism, but it is hard to tell who is saying something because it may be common vernacular and who is saying something INTENDED to be a racial slur.

Unfortunately, for two people, the thread became about the title.
