PETA Protest!
I'm seriously considering a protest against PETA. Their tactics are getting more obscene by the day. Reference:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=935746#935788

http://www.furisdead.com/mommykills300.pdf

I'm thinking about something along the lines of a "grill in" as close to PETA's national headquarters as we can obtain a permit to do so. The only requirement would be for attendees to agree to a big tailgate party and the MUST cook some form of meat or meat product on their grills.

No costumes, no disorderly conduct, no fake animals on the grills. Maybe a few "Animals can be Food" or "Meat is Good" signs, or something of that type. Just come on with your grill and burgers, hot dogs, steaks - whatever. Wear you usual cookout or tailgate party garb. In short, we just have a nice big peaceful picnic - eating meat.

What do you think?

3. I did not request personal insults.
I requested opinions of a proposed protest.

I thank you for your opinion of the protest. I choose to discount your insult on the basis that you may have misread my post.

4. so where's the personal insult?
hit alert and hit the mods decide.

"I choose to discount your insult on the basis that you may have misread my post."

What did I misread?

Say, we kinda have a problem with a monstrous President and his evil administration - wouldn't it be more, uh - I dunno, BETTER - to concentrate on that right now?

15. The impication that I either am or would willingly be as shill
for any group:

<b>maybe you can tie in your MEAT IS GOOD thing with local butcher shops and fast food, get corporate underwriting and free catering. Then you can form some shill frontgroup for the meat industry, CONCERNED CITIZENS FOR TAKING INDUSTRY HANDOUTS.<b>

I'm simply tired of PETA using such underhanded tactics to co-opt children through fear. If you clicked the links, you'll notice the poster is designed to both create an aversion to animal products and to alienate children from their parents. That tacitc is heinous.

There are arguably larger issues. I would argue that there are larger issues - until I consider that these folks are striking at the very core of humanity by attempting to create division within families.

a bad spot of mustard?

In any case, I wish you all the best in your brave crusade against those awful monsters at PETA, who have single-handedly terrorized the world for decades.

Making the world safe for eating meat is a brave, noble task. We could use more patriots like yourself.

If any animal can eat it, it therefore follows that it is edible.

78. eating meat affects people
Most directly, by causing heart attacks.

Also because it takes so much more energy to grow soybeans to feed to pigs and eat the pigs then just to eat the soybeans. It's a huge waste of oil and water.

"Pollution
The meat industry causes more water pollution in the United States than all other industries combined because the animals raised for food in the U.S. produce 130 times more excrement than the human population. Every year, factory farms dump 220 billion gallons of animal waste onto farmland and into our waterways.

Land
Twenty times more land is required to feed a meat-eater than to feed a pure vegetarian.

Water
Raising animals for food consumes more than half of all the water used in the United States. It takes 2,500 gallons of water to produce a pound of meat, but only 25 gallons to produce a pound of wheat."

7. I'm in
I never did like the PETA tactics or philosophy. Think of all the medicines that have been developed through animal research? where would AIDS vaccines be without animal research?

If people didn't eat them, who would? Other animals, of course. It's prime rib for me, this year.

I am not trying to minimize the suffering that is inflicted on animals, but perhaps regulation rather than prohibition is the answer.

Merry Christmas

would PETA suggest not treating an animal because the cure may have been tested on animals to be developed?

I agree with regulation, I like meat and I loathe the tactics that PETA use to target children. A religious organization would never get away with that.

81. Me too! Nothing
like an animal thread to make me think maybe there is little difference between "us" and "them". Many who consider themselves "progressives" love nothing more than to belittle those of us who care deeply about innocent lives, and yes I'm talking about animals. They claim they resent animal rights people "cramming" their agenda down their throats, yet we are expected to tolerate their shit and their lifestyle choices crammed down ours day after day and ruining the Planet in the process. Those who in particular revel in the suffering of helpless animals, veal calves in particular, have NOTHING in common with me and obviously do NOT share my values at all. Sick, disgusting, and heartless. Like I said, nothing like a PETA thread to even knock the 9/11 commission story off our forum's front page. Sometimes I wonder why I even bother with this place. :eyes: :puke: :grr:

87. oh my goodness
my sentiments EXACTLY. i guess i am sorely mistaken for thinking this is truly progressive forum, then again i guess it is "democratic" underground and not "progressive" underground. the comments made in this and the other current peta thread are truly heartbreaking for me. people wanting to organize a protest against peta is something i would expect to see on a rabid right wing site, sponsered by the cattleman's beef association, not here on DU. i'm not saying everyone here should be an ardent animal rights activist, but i would hope that these so called "progressives" and "liberals" would at the very least by sympathetic to our cause, to understand we are fighting for defenseless lives, for those less fortunate, which supposedly is the mantra of a progressive liberal. instead we get tired old "mmm steak" jokes and a belitting of our values. how many damn burger joint ads will i see today, how many commercials for pork, how many "beef, it's whats for dinner"? how many animal rights commercials will i see? how many "go vegetarian" commercials? NONE. yeah, we really are opressors here, we really are, as you said, cramming our agendas down their throats.

Give me a break. That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. You claim to care about innocent lives then are defending the harrassment of children. Not just harrassment but actual terror. You must realize that you terrorize these children when you do stuff like the nutcracker. Obviously inclusion of the next generation is not on the agenda. How many future animal rights people are now completely terrified of and turned off by the tactics taken. The survival of any group must include BRAINS. Someone did not take time to think through the results of this ploy. Boy, some marketing scheme. Ha ha ha.

Hey we could bring stuffed animals (like toys, not dead animals) and have a tea party (with steaks). And we could burn the stuffed animals (and our step-children who would also be there) with cigarette butts. And maybe play a fun game of touch football using a pink bunny rabbit doll as the ball.

Ok, I've probably gone too far, so keep in mind that I would never harm a toy animal (well, not again, this one time in band camp this asshole had a lucky stuffed (toy) parrot attached to his base drum, and well, anyways, the band director caught my friends and I burning it with a soldering (sp?) iron. Good times).

39. That would be funny too.
And it would probably be a good game, cause no one wants to get hit with a big chunk of rotting meat. And it's not wasteful cause the meat's already gone bad. We could play a game of baseball using a rabbit's head and leg of lamb for the ball and bat, but that might be a little too far . . . unless we ate them later! Hell yeah!

But if any 'pubs show up we could punch them in the eye and then give them some cold steak to reduce the swelling. That's multipurpose.

75. not buying into the PETA argument
Because it's all been said - but a few thoughts popped up while reading this and the other PETA thread.............

I only eat organic meat and animal products. I don't have an ethical problem with eating an animal but do have one with unneccesary cruelty - and the plain fact is that commercial farming is by it's very nature cruel. That the fur trade is cruel also I think is beyond argument. Visit a piggery and see the welts on the sows, hang out at a battery farm, go to an abbatoir and SEE how animals are killed it might turn you veggie - if you can see all that AND still be happy eating commercial (or any) meat then FINE - but if you refuse to even look at it or allow your child too look (as in this case) then you really shouldn't be eating/wearing it.

There seems to be a fair bit of dellusion here

"Hey we could bring stuffed animals (like toys, not dead animals)"

you're willing to have a big dead animal cook out but only if they look like steaks not actual animals??

"Most rational, thinking, people are outraged by animal cruelty, and will never willingly cause harm or cause an animal to come to harm"

it's very hard to eat something or wear it's skin without the animal coming to harm

Anyway - I think everyone has the right to eat or wear an animal but PETA has the right to protest...and seriously wouldn't most responsible parents prevent a complete stranger walking up and giving something to their kid??

I adore animals. I think part of their message on the inhumane treatment of lab animals is valid. BUT the rest is crap! It's a neopagan, pantheist org. and that's not me. PEOPLE FIRST. I like what greenpeace did with the sea creatures...but PETA? Throwing blood on people? Boycotting rodeos? (maybe circus' is cool) These people ought to be in jail or at least put out of business. They are insane.

101. Your ability to exercise your rights ends when you infringe on my rights.
Attacking people with paint, and terrorizing children, are NOT protected rights.

It's pretty simple. You can protest as much as you want as long as you do so in a legal manner. Once you start breaking the law, however, your right to protest ENDS.

They're supposed to be getting a message out.

Some groups complain that they had a protest with thousands of people and there was almost no press coverage.

PETA gets press coverage with clever campaigns, like five people walking onstage with anti-fur signs during a Victoria's Secret show. That clip was played over and over on the news.

The five people were arrested, but it's better than a protest in which a hundred people are arrested.

of idiotic thugs. They are one shade short of being a terrorist organization.

If any of those sick pukes tried to hand those fliers to my child I would make a citizen arrest for child abuse.

They are such a disgusting group.

... PETA used the 9/11 terrorist attacks to promote their own agenda.

... "The Holocaust on Your Plate" -- "PETA has decided that the killing of chickens for food is equivalent to the Jewish Holocaust in both its scope and cruelty."

... "A new ad campaign by an animal rights group compares the murder of women on a B.C. pig farm to the treatment of animals killed for food. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) says the full-page ad is a legitimate campaign, but the families of the murdered women say it's disgusting. The ad featured a series of headlines describing the B.C. murder victims, who were drugged and slaughtered, their heads sawed off and their body parts refrigerated."

... "PETA has been accused of funneling money to terrorist organizations (ELF)."

And people support these freaks

93. Suggestion: Get A Life !
PETA is a valuable and highly moral organization attempting to deal with one of the last vestiges of human arrogance, ignorance, and prejudice.

PETA, with its efforts to save the lives and prevent the suffering of animals is also, directly, attempting to save your own stupid meat-eating ass from the health consequences of doing so.

Amazing how the compassionate, ever class-conscious, progressive attitudes which pertain to oh so many issues and matters here at DU are not, likewise, extended to other species.

Sort of reminds me of the GOP and the hypocrisy inherent in their marketing of their own presumed "compassionate" conservatism.

DU - "compassionate" progressives - unless, that is, if it applies to animals and our own selfish and outdated need to exploit them and their pain and suffering!

112. Cats are too stringy
Outdoor ones tend to be gamey too.

Dog on the other hand....hmmm...nothing like fresh country fried mastiff steaks.

So, what's your point? Food choices are culturally driven, and household pets are generally not considered food. Rabbit being the exception, although the rabbits for food are typically not the same breeds as rabbits for pets. As for making a hat from the fur - if you're going to eat 'em, you might as well put the other useful bits of the carcass to good use.

I fail to see what is so cruel about eating animals. Humans are omnivores, and we're evolved to eat high-calorie dense foods, like other animals. Animals eat each other. Humans are animals. Get over it. This by no means excuses animal cruelty, factory farming, US-style slaughterhouses, antibiotics for growth, RBGH, etc. To quote George Carlin, if God didn't want us to eat animals he wouldn't have made them out of meat.

121. Because...
as the saying goes, "shit splatters".

Their bizarre and abrasive tactics make the rest of us look like raving loonies too. It's guilt by association, and I'm sick of getting the rap for PETA's stupidity.

Same deal with groups like the CPUSA. Yes, they're progressive. Yes, they damage the rest of the progressive movement in the minds of the vast majority of the people. Yes, those now irritated people represent votes that we NEED.

The idiot fringe shouldn't be encouraged, there's too much stuff going on for us to have our mainstream message destroyed by such far-left fringe idiocy.

Abusing animals: Bad.
Traumatizing children as a publicity stunt: even worse.

There are better ways to get votes and defeat Bush than jabbing sharp sticks into the eyes of the vast majority of voters, as this most recent PETA campaign does. Poking "regular" people HURTS us more than it hurts the right. The Republicans understand this, which is why they haven't put forward a Constitutional ban on all abortion. If we don't make this same kind of realization, we're condemning ourself to minority status in perpetuity, with the attendant destruction of the manistream values we all hold so dear.

124. Well then, by your logic
We shouldn't be associating with Democrats, especially the ones in Congress, since "shit splatters", the Dems in Congress wind up making us all look as spineless as they are.

PETA does good work, results that even benefit us carnivores. And every society needs groups that are out on the fringe, if everybody was centerists, main stream organizations nothing would get done and we would wind up a society of mush.

133. The time to be pushing lunatic fringe ideas...
is when you're IN power. If you do it while OUT of power, all you do is guarantee that you'll NEVER be in power.

All PETA does is help brand the left as being crazy with middle Americans. That helps the Republicans, not us.

128. crap
Your "guilt by association" arguement is just that--crap. PETA positions don't sully the Democratic party. PETA does not speak for the party. Were there "anti-fur" planks in the 2000 Democratic platform? Anti-hamburger? Milk sucks? How about anti-circus animals? No, I didn't think so.

Nobody gave you the power to speak for the entire Democratic party, so please, speak for yourself when referring to who is in a minority status in perpetuity.

132. Do you deny....
that the Democratic Party is currently the minority in the Federal Government? Want to keep it that way? Then have the Democrats come out for PETA.

We're in a battle with the Republicans for the "hearts and minds" of the generally non-political "moderate" voters. Having the progressives (and remember, as viable parties go, the Democrats ARE the ONLY progressives) even REMOTELY connected with groups like PETA hurts us with "middle America".

It behooves us to put as much distance between the Democratic Party and PETA as possible. Why else do you think Kerry went on his well-publicized hunting trip?

Remember this?

134. Did you even read my last post?
where is this "remote connection with PETA" other than somewhere in your mind?

130. Meat eaters get mad at PETA because they
are trying to defend their actions (which they know are wrong). Furthermore, you can't say you love animals and at the same time kill one for your supper. Don't eat anything that runs from you when you try to catch it to eat.

131. I have the same right to eat meat...
as a fox, racoon, or any other omnivorous animal. Once they outlaw those animals eating meat, I'll consider giving it up.
