The media refuses to believe that Bush knew about possible attacks....
It doesn't fit into their paradigm - or what they perceive Bush and the Republicans to be - that they are strong on defense and could never be so incompetent to allow something like 9/11 to happen. It is paradoxical to everything they believe and everything they propagandize about the Republicans. For them, it is almost impossible that something like that could be true.

So, by and large, they refuse to report on it. It is so much easier to talk about Michael Jackson or to talk about Saddam's sleep deprivation. It will have to hit them over the head several times to get their attention. That is why we cannot let the story die.

34. Bush's reaction may tell a story
<[I posted this in another spot here, but this is where it really belongs>]

I wonder if there's a certain grain of truth that Bush was told something in passing that there was a minor threat (hey, just like the band), but wasn't sure enough in his mind to act upon it.

Imagine him for a moment in the pre 9/11 world ordering all planes grounded or imposing post 9/11 style security precautions on the airports... How well would that have gone over? Imagine the embarrassment if it proved to be a false lead? Imagine the loss in the economy in that single day when things were in a downturn. Imagine the ridicule!

Imagine the uproar on this very message board!

I wonder if there was a conversation that went on to balance the risks, and it was determined unwise to shut down the airports, etc. on an unsubstantiated warning. Imagine that warning turning out to be true, and watching 3,000 of the citizens you swore to protect die a fiery death. That may explain his reaction in the video to the suggestion of foreknowledge, and his passion immediately following the tragedy. It may have been because he felt in part responsible, but not to a point rising to the level of incompetence as he's accused.

47. You're not taking his responsibility for 9-11 in the context of...
...his 'presidency' and being 'commander in chief'...nor does it explain why he sat with children for 20 or so minutes while thousands died. It's as if he was 'ordered' not to do anything.

- We should give the benefit of doubt to those who make honest mistakes. But the Bushies were arrogant in their disregard of anything Clinton...including his administrations warnings of an impending terrorist event.

- Bush* could have warned the airlines to increase security at the very least...without shutting down the airlines as you suggest. He could also have ordered that those suspected of being connected to terrorism be watched more closely.

- There are many things he COULD HAVE done without causing economic damage or 'embarassment'. And if you look at ALL the evidence...it appears as if the Bush* admin. intentionally ignored the threats and allowed it happen.

5. Many Americans probably suspect it but won't confront it
Because, if LIHOP or even MIHOP is ever proven, the outrage, upheaval, and level of crisis that America will go through will be unlike anything this country has ever seen.

I stronlg suspect that many "average Muhrkins" -- people who aren't as deeply involved as us in following this story -- are fully aware of this. How do they choose to react? By shutting the whole scenario out of their minds, so they can get on with the "more important" tasks of trying to keep their jobs, pay their bills, and raise their kids.

How can we get these concerns out into the open? Show that there's a clearly defined, orderly, effective path from where we are to where we'd be after such a thing occurred -- a path that's free of the "revolution in the streets" or even "civil war" that terrifies so many people.

The first step is to get some proof to back up such a claim and then give it to Dan Rather. He seems to be on our side in this war.

Yes, proof would be nice. But something like this will never have absolute, irrefutable proof. Not to convince the fanatics on the right.
Most of them love Bush more than they love this country, which is absolutely terrifying and disgusting.
I swear to god, you could show most reich-wingers videos of Bush and Osama planning the attack together and they still would blame Clinton and the liberal media.

17. They, and the public, do not want to believe a lot...
that's going on in our country. They want to think our system is indestructible, or that no political force would endanger the country and our democratic institutions to advance its own political agenda. For some reason, they want to believe that George Bush is a good man. (The son of a relative of mine leaves for Iraq the first of January, and while his dad has lost confidence in Bush, he still believes he's a "good man.")

As for the press, they welcomed an illegitimate President into our White House, excusing themselves over and over again because there were "no tanks in the streets." Given that, we can expect them to try to "protect" the American people from the knowledge that the man in their White House may have done little or nothing to protect them from the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

68. Your assumption is totally wrong.
The Senatate Intelligence does not know the same thing the president and nationl security know. That's why they have hearings - to find out whats going on. If they knew everything the WH knew, there would be no need for hearings by executive officers and dept heads. Bush was busy doing away with every executive order that Clinton had implemented and, at the behest of the right-wing, would not listen to any advice on intelligence from the Clinton Administration either.

21. Most Americans are not so cynical as to believe a President could
actually know about something like that and allow it to happen. Hell even I don't believe that but I do believe they were Derelict in their duty. I like hearing from the head of the 9-11 investigation that it Could Have and Should Have Been Prevented That means there was Dereliction of Duty an Impeachable offense. This is Huge IMHO for the Democrats. It needs to be hammered on daily.

27. There has to be a lot of bright people that run these media companies
some have to know, without a shadow of doubt, that Bush had some idea of possible attacks pre-911. The problem for them is it becomes a huge conflict of interest because the very man they support turns out to have been able to prevent or possibly try to prevent 911.

Imagine for a second that the shoe was on the other foot - that it was Al Gore and most media giants were solid Ds and not Rs. The loss of credibility (and consumer confidence) would be astronomical! Here, for years, the people that America trusts for information about the nation have, in effect, completely lied, covered up, and deceived the American people on a grand scale probably never seen before in our history. Sponsors get antsy about that kind of talk - I would imagine the stock market would fall on its face if the truth ever came out. Therefore, the media plays ball, and so do their sponsors, and their affiliates, and most of the backers. They all KNOW, but it would go against their capitalist ideals to tell their money sources the truth - that the government knew and completely failed to stop a terrorist attack on U.S. soil. That the government willfulingly ALLOWED it to happen to gain what? Political leverage?

I believe the real reason Al Gore gave up and acquiesced to Bush was because we had crossed the threshold into the political unknown - would the people riot and cause mass chaos if Gore had defied the Supreme Court? Would they have arrested him if he had tried to assume office? Same thing about 911, everyone kinda knows but no one wants to say anything because the truth is far more horrifying than pandering to the public's appetite for tabloid garbage (Michael Jackson etc).

Bush held the reigns of the executive branch. He had the power to take action, and he didn't. To bad for him, cuz a tornado is heading his way.

Ever read the memo that was on Condi's desk a few months before the attack? Read it, and tell me that it wouldn't have sent chills up and down your spine, if it had been you, instead of Condi with the power to take action to defend our country. They did nothing, that I know of, in response to that memo. And that memo is just the tip of the iceberg,

This could be Whitewater all over again.

and it's why they keep trying to bring Clinton and Monica into it. Fine, let's bring Clinton and Monica into the equation - let's see, that fraud of an impeachment came at a time when the terrorists were planning this attack. Millions of dollars were spent on Starr's investigation, and hundreds of FBI agents' valuable time was wasted. The government was effectively divided, and the news media went along on the repub. impeachment circus ride. Thanks Repukes! Thanks for spending all that time and money and media attention of "getting" Bill Clinton. Thank You! ALL OF AMERICA THANKS YOU FOR THE VALUABLE USE OF OUR RESOURCES AND TIME!!!!!

And to think that all they found was a BJ - so sad, and tragic. History will damn these repukes....

103. You're clutching at straws that may or may not even exist
You don't know, yet, what the dems on the SIC tried to communicate to the White House, or what they urged them to do. All they can do is give the executive branch a nudge or two - they prolly assumed things were being done, after all, things had been taken care of under Clinton.

You forget, this WH is SECRETIVE, and they hate dems., like all you trained monkeys have been taught to do. What makes you think they even listened to the advice given by the dems on the SIC? YOU DON'T KNOW, that's the bottom line.

For all we know the dems on the SIC took it seriously, and the WH said, oh yeah, we're following up on it, and then boom - disaster struck! What did the WH do in response to this explosive intel? Nothing, that we know of.

Hello Whitewater Part Duece!

115. Bullshit, the Reich Wing media chews up and spits out anyone
who dares question this Whitehouse. Contrary to what you've been taught, we are at a point in history where the media is, overall, very right wing. People are branded traitors and worse, just by criticizing the admin. Shit, people were, and still are, afraid of the climate of fear and demagougery that had been drummed up the the WH and their ARMY of media foot soldiers.

It's just now getting to the point where things like this can be talked about in public. It's been an internet buzz thing for the most part so far.

And, you are still assuming that Dems in Congress knew, and know things against this admin. You don't all you do is speculate.

Time will tell, though.

Edited on Thu Dec-18-03 08:20 PM by Sterling
I don't suppose you think this will touch them though. Why do you insist on believing that the WH has to share everything with the Senate? That is clearly false.

You do realize what the executive branch is responsible don't you? I have yet to see the senate order the military to do anything.

Edited on Thu Dec-18-03 08:59 PM by rumguy
Yes, they could have, they had the power to bring the players from various agencies into a room and get them to work together. Instead, they sat on their hands and wasted valuable time. Why did they do that? I don't know, but I have my suspicians.

116. Bullcrap - don't give me that hate radio line that the only thing we
could have done is go around arresting Arab-looking people at random. God, you guys need to pry yourself away from that hate radio, faux news, freeper alterna-world where the only options prior to 9/11 where doing what the admin did (basically nothing) and going around randomly arresting and rounding up arabs - that would have been hundreds of thousands if not millions of people.

No, the specific evidence was there, it just had to be located in the FBI and the CIA - the WH could have ordered people to look for that intel - yet, the evidently didn't - then we could have looked at people that evidence pointed to, and some of that evidence was, we know now, surprisinly specific!

False dichotomies are not going to get you very far.

You keep saying we don't know what's in the report. True, but what we do know already is fucking bad. And who's to say all the truth is even in that report? The truth will come out, eventually, and then we will see where the chips fall.

But, the power was in the Admin's hands, they had the power to take action and they didn't - they had warnings - THAT WE ALREADY KNOW! Can you even name one thing they did in response to those warnings? Of course you can't, cuz all they do is stonewall - leading more and more people to believe they are hiding something.

It's gonna be hello Watergate Part 2!!!

It is possible to be smart, and still be a moron ya know. He's ignorant, that I believe. But anyway, you are over simplifying the argument here - this isn't just about Bush, it's about his whole admin., and the cruel ruthless way it views the world.

THEY KNEW, we know that already, they knew something was up. The rest of the story is in the process of being answered. It's gonna be an interesting next few years, that's for sure.

110. I agree, anyone that knew should be held accountable, but the admin.
had more of the pieces of the puzzle in front of them than anyone else, including the dems on the SIC. They had daily access to briefings and reports from intel. agencies, they had the power to direct action and GET RESULTS. That's why I see them as more culpapble. I worked for awhile in a Senate Office on Cap. Hill - you'd be surprised how "out of the loop" these Senators can be relative to what's happening in the executive branch.

The power of a Senator to effect government policy, by themselves, by just picking up a phone is very limited. They can do that by passing bills, but that takes time and effort.

The Admin has the power to effect government policy immediately. That's the diff....

74. Or
I wonder if Bush was warned repeatedly by several countries. And what if, hypothetically, someone like, say, John Ashcroft mysteriously stopped flying commercially around August of 2001 becaue of a "threat assessment".

And then, and once again, this is just hypothetical, suppose Bush were connected to a bunch of neoconservative assholes who call themselves the Project for a New American Century www.newamericancentury.org who had a twisted design for world domination, starting literally with the siezing of oil assets in the middle east.

Suppose the attack plan for Afganistan was planned well before September of 2001.

But, of course, to do that Bush would need a justifiable reason to take the nation to war. What would possibly justify first-strike warfare? How could someone who swore during the debates not to use US troops for "nation building" or as the "world's policemen" possibly justify a unilateral military action while toting a doctrine of preemptive war?

I am guessing he would need some kind of attack on the US, a "spectacular attack" that would realy just rattle the general population into a state of shock and complacency. One that would have then rushing of to Wal Mart and buying American flags, without regard for the "Made in China" stickers on them.

Of course, he would need an ambiguous threat. Someone without an address, someone without any tangible agenda in particular, someone who could serve as a perpetual boogeyman for literally as long as necessary.

Now suppose this same president recieved warnings about a "spectacular attack" planned on various US targets...

I tell you to fuck off.

Listen, pal. Why don't you do some reading on the numerous connections between the Bushes and bin Ladens, and the Bushes and Saudi Arabia? See how glorious your cokehead, alcoholic, half-witted "leader" looks then.

Or, if you are too lazy or are just too fucking stupid to do that, at least back up your assertions with some credible sources.

Think about all of the ways 9/11 benifitted Bush, and please do yourself a favor and get past Clinton.

You right wing shitheads pat yourselves on the back about how you are keeping tabs on the "klintoons" and how you won't let them get away with anything. But, all the while Bush is lying to you every day. And do you notice? Probably not. You are too busy being caught up in all of this jingoistic bullshit.

Take your psychotic, sycophantic ravings elsewhere, buddy, because I don't take interest in worshipping alcoholic morons who probably couldn't even pass an IQ test.

Some truth to it, there are things Clinton could have done better. But much is complete BS. For instance, having the Yemeni gvmt extradite bin Laden if Clinton visited there? Bin Laden was living in Afghanistan at the time, not Yemen!

But what I really want to know is why does the list end when Clinton leaves office? What about all the failures of Bush before 9/11? Where's that list?

Got proof that Clinton never went to the WTC? Funny, how can you argue about Bin Laden getting away and then argue that Clinton fired missiles into Sudan as so many clinton haters like to claim..it would seem one action aimed at Bin Laden cancels out the other.

BTW, there is something to be said for following international law, regarding having proof of Bin Laden's crimes..oh and what about those oil deals that were going on with the Taliban while they were hiding Bin Laden?...perhaps if the moron you elected were doing his job instead of jacking off at the ranch, four planes might not have been hijacked at once...

OH YEAH and something else I always wanted to ask a Bush defender. Even if none of this ishis fault...on 9/11 how come NOBODY notified the Port Authority so that they would NOT set up a staging area in the other tower when the Bushies CLEARLY KNEW another plane was headed to New York in the same vicinity of the towers? How come they never told the Port Authority so that they did NOT return people in the other tower to their offices when it IN FACT was also a target.

Even if one gives Bush the TOTAL benefit of the doubt as NOT KNOWING, how do you explain that EXTREME level of incompetence during a national emergency.

Care to answer???

Do i know who did it? nope. Would i like to know? yep. Has the white house pursued it? nope.

i'm not talking about a backroom conspiracy, i'm talking abouta verifiable, recorded action that PROVES someone knew what was going to happen. It just happens to be a coincidence that the firm that was involved in the trading transaction was formerly headed by a deputy director of the CIA.

Where is the money? It hasn't been collected yet, because the market was shut down in the days following 9/11 and it prevented whomever made the money from collecting without being caught. Its just sitting there waiting for someone to sift through the blood to claim it.

These are bald-faced facts that are indisputable.
