Leaders of the country's most prominent ultra-Orthodox yeshiva are scrambling to distance themselves from a book by one of their disciples, which argues that gentiles are "completely evil" and Jews constitute a separate, genetically superior species.

Written by Rabbi Saadya Grama — an alumnus of Beth Medrash Govoha, the renowned yeshiva in Lakewood, N.J. — the self-published book attempts to employ classical Jewish sources in defense of a race-based theory of Jewish supremacy. Grama's book, published in Hebrew under the title "Romemut Yisrael Ufarashat Hagalut," includes flowery endorsements from the most revered religious scholars at the renowned Lakewood yeshiva, including the institution's foremost religious leader, or rosh yeshiva, Rabbi Aryeh Malkiel Kotler.

Or that it has not been written by a jew?

If not, then what's racist about reporting about this book?
If anything here is racist then it's this book and the Rabbi who wrote it.

I don't think that anyone (including the topic starter) is claiming all jews think like this Rabbi.

BTW, it seems these kinds of news items tend to appear around the times of the Jewish festivals and holy days. At least that's how it seems to me.

Still, there is a perception among some of the non-Jewish population that Jewish people are overly-represented in certain professions that tend to give them more influence in the population than other groups have.

Jewish boys study Talmud in Hebrew school from the time they are quite young, maybe eight or nine or maybe even younger. Talmud is, among other things, a set of laws and arguments about cases and how law ought to apply. Of course those Jewish students feel comfortable going into the legal professions as they get older. They have a "jump start" in that direction!

As for some of the other professions, one example is that Jewish people were "permitted" to handle the money in medieval times because the Christians believed that it was forbidden for them to demand interest for money (my how things change!), so the Jews got very good at handling money and "growing" it. That there are now many Jewish people in banking and finance is not so surprising really.

For every criticism of Jews with respect to the alleged excess of power and/or intelligence they have there is an element in Jewish tradition or in the history of the Jewish people that explains why they have talent in that area. It's amazing that a group of people who never were more than about 2% of the general population of the world could manage to draw so much attention to themselves in any natural, normal course of events. It's not so amazing when you consider that they have had to survive in so many different, and generally hostile situations. You draw strength from your traditions and you adapt to survive. It's that simple.

It's sad when some Jewish "leader" tries to twist the truth, but Jews are as human and as fallible as the next people.

One thing that's important to remember is that Judaism is different from, say, Catholicism. We don't place any sort of special "infallibility" on our rabbis as Catholics place in the Pope. What any rabbi happens to say is just his personal take on an issue, and not "dogma." Rabbis are respected for their special religious learning just as doctors are respected for their ability to heal, but when one of them comes out with nonsense like some theory of racial or genetic superiority he apparently isn't as learned as one might hope.

I guess it's instructive that this fellow's book is self-published, eh?

10. Ultra Orthodox Scare This Conservative Jew

I don't think this is right wing tripe...if anything there's an unholy alliance between the fundie and many orthodox Jewish groups...but an example of the extremism and elistism that exists in the American Orthodox Jewish community.

It's racist, sexist and condemns all who don't subscribe to their strict, literal view of the world. I've lost several friends to what I call "The Dark Side" as they become subservient to a cult that all but erases any past personality and the attachment to friends and family that go with it.

I see so much in the ultra-orthodox that resembles a reverse anti-semetism that has always been latent in the Jewish community and is rampant within this very insular world. They are dangerous to many secular Jews, thus why many on DU will tread lightly on this topic or lash out in almost a Pavlovian fashion.

Yes, I've seen anti-Gentile-ism in the Orthodox community especially in their communities in New York, Chicago & LA that have built up considerable political clout (a lot of it with the GOOP). These people are being led into a false security as they can be easily cast aside for RW political expediency.

The title and synopsis -- "Anti-Gentilism on the rise", "The goy, by his source and in his very essence is completely evil" -- suggests to me that this is racist, or else an effort by non-jews to smear jews. Either way, it's inflammatory and against the rules without some explanation.
