How can we reach the real compassionate conservatives?

1. I'm not sure if we can until

something immediate and painful strikes their families, and even then its a longshot. At least, that has been the experience with my own family so far. :(

I hope I'm totally wrong, and I won't quit trying...just my thoughts.

2. A good friend of mine is a C.C.

He voted for Bush in 2000. Now he's a commited Dean supporter. I feel he came to this decision on his own, with no prodding---he's a very strong-minded gent. And the best of the comp. cons. will do same. It did take two and a half years of Bush to get him to that point. But between the war and the environment, he re-evaluated his point of view.

And that's where it ends.

Even with friends, it might be a case of "you'll find out who your *real* friends are".

If one of us were to drop dead right in front of them, they'd step over our body and keep on walking.

Somehow, that doesn't exactly meet my definition of "compassionate".

6. compassion trumps everything

If they are really compassionate, now that they have seen what bush is really about, they should be ready to move away from him.

It seems to me that we can help them in that move by giving them positive reasons to support our candidate(s). I know that Dean's "Common Sense for America" (if that is the correct name) can be pretty convincing. And I'm sure that other candidates have similar pieces.

But I dont' think we attract them to our cause by attacking each other.

7. Two layers

Layer one - economy. Families struggling because people were laid off. They may not blame Bush because they assume 9/11 is the cause for all of it. We can enlighten them. ;)

Layer two - Iraq. My father is a Vietnam vet and swing voter and I sent him the article Padraig posted. He is convinced that Iraq is another Vietnam and his heart breaks for the troops. He is voting D in 2004 because Bush pushed us into this war.

I know they are active, because I have on occassion heard them rollover in their graves in response to Bushies pronouncements.

9. It's an oxymoron.

The "compassionate" modifier was tacked on by Poppy so he wouldn't seem so , well, hateful. A lot of mildly religious types fell for this justification for being mean 95% of the time. I didn't buy it then, and don't now. One can be compassionate, or conservative.
