If I were young enough to be drafted, I'd refuse to go.

No way in hades that I'd become cannon fodder for the Fourth Reich, no way. I don't apologise for that sentiment either. I held the same position during the First Gulf War, when I was 22-23, and argued against the majority of students in a class aptly named "War & Peace".

It wasn't such a popular view then, thankfully I didn't care what people thought of me, but I wonder what the response would be now in 2003/2004 if the BFEE dream of conscription came to pass?

Would it, conscientious (sp?) objectors/Off to Canada/Mexico/Underground, be worse than during Vietnam?

Would the Internet be the reason?

The truly ironic thing is that I'm far from a Pacifist. I respect the belief but I'm simply not that civilized. Would I have said the same thing during WWI had I had been privy to good information? Probably. WWII? Probably not. Vietnam? 50/50...

Does it bother some of you that I'd say such a thing?

Nope. But don't worry, nobody's going to insist that you do. :)

2. No, but one of the problems of not having the draft is that
the chickenhawks don't have to go to war. When there was a draft, many of them did go to war who didn't go AWOL like *Duckya. We need to make going to war a lot tougher to accomplish than it is today. I don't know of anyone who wouldn't sign up gladly or go to war against a real enemy, but no one should have to put their lives on the line for this travesty of a war.

3. Neither of my sons
will go. They would rather go to prison than go to fight for these guys. We will see, they are both just the right age.

4. To dodge or not to dodge that was a question...
for many of us in the late 60's and early 70's

The personal problem I got caught up in was the realization that if I dodged, someone else would be called. The big green machine was going to be fed one way or another, and I didn't feel good about handing my bad luck off to someone else.

5. 25
25: George W. Bush's score on the flight aptitude test. 25 is the minimum acceptable score; one point lower and his application would've been rejected. Nevertheless, his application was fast tracked ahead of those who had scored far higher on the test.
25: number of American men born the same day as George W. Bush who were killed in Vietnam.

6. Nope, I'm on your side.
I have a son who, fortunately, is too old now to be drafted, plus he has a disability. He is deaf in one ear. But when he was younger, I aways swore that if he were to be drafted, I would send him to Canada.

8. Nope. It doesn't.
This is a subject which comes up on a regular basis: to draft or not to draft. That is the question. One person posted, that he would absolutely go. As his duty to his country. He would die to defend his country, if need be.

The problem is, this is not a war about defense. It's a war about oil. And corporate profits. Still feel like sacrificing your life?
