An explanation for Threat Level Orange
I asked a close friend who works with DHS about the latest threat level change today. His comment was there is no imminent threat, nor has there been anything discernable on the horizon. His explanation was that based on nhow DHS is funded, the only way they can keep all the analysts working over the holiday is to elevate the threat level. If they didn't, everyone would be out of the office for at least two weeks.

Interesting, eh?

1. JM I wish you could elaborate
You know this is one of those that is acutally NEWS WORTHY

My personal cynical view is the AFP story that SH was catpured by the Kurds and then turned over to us... it knocked the story off the news cycle FAST

Oh and it has been fun watching CNN all day.

3. It's really quite simple.
They have had increased "chatter", but nothing really concrete. Based on that issue, they want to keep the federal employees working through what is normally holiday time. The only way DHS can justify keeping people from taking their vacation time, require them to be performing analysis, and actually have the time paid for, is to elevate the threat level.

This way they can scare the American Public AND screw public servants at the same time.

There is other news that is actually far scarier. I just need to find out if I am allowed to elaborate on it publicly. If so, I will post about it next week. Hint: think Republican National Convention.

2. My first thought was that it was an attempt to keep a string of events
The saddam capture, Lybia, Another threat level to remind people to be scared but that teh govt will take care of them. All of this leading up to christmas which should produce some economic stimulation. Its possible that the administration is just trying to get as big a bounce as possible by clumping events.

4. Based on their past patterns of behaviour...
that was my line of thought as well. That is why I asked. My friend meets with Ridge fairly regularly.
