Life under a Bush-led Martial Law.
Edited on Mon Dec-22-03 02:33 AM by Cascadian
I was wondering what everybody's take on what life is going to be like should the constitution be tossed out and full on authoritarianism is unleashed? We all know that this will mean websites like DU, Indymedia, Buzzflash will be forced to close down, some major opponents of Bush be either detained or flee the country, people like ourselves could be watched closely and/or be detained as well. But I would like a take to find out what you think will happen? The right-wing fundamentalist Christian agenda shoved down our throat, everything will be privatized, and the Republican Party will be become the only political party. how long will this last?

Let's here your angle.

7. Guns
2. it'd never pass muster . . . too manny gun owners

Is this a joke? Because the gun owners in this country would ironically be the ones Bush could most easily con into supporting a facist government as proposed in this topic.

8. They probably would become a civilian militia sponsored by the government
Just to "keep us in line". I am certain there are many "good ol' boys" from Enumclaw or wherever that would love to come to Seattle to teach us Seattle liberal "freaks" a lesson. I think they would let them do it too!

12. He'd have to take their guns, too.
What? Calico Johnny is gonna come and take only Democrat guns, while leaving the NRA members with theirs? I don't give the "Other Side" much credit for having brains,But even the densest of them could understand "Hey, look at this...And you guys thought CLINTON was gonna take away guns. You guys are NEXT, y'know!"

He'd have to seize them all. Either that, or he'd be left having to deal with a pandemic of house burgleries in this nation. The "resistance" ("Gore Loyalists") would get guns somehow, and would rather hit Bubba's double-wide than a National Guard Armory...

13. sorry, but that is bull
stop painting gun owners with such a broad brush. I am a gun owner, from a family of gun owners, in the "supposedly" pro-Bush midwest.

Martial law would be the beginning of the end of puke facism. Even and ESPECIALLY here. Gun owners won't stand for it because it can't work unless they give up their guns.

Cold dead hands is a phrase taken literally around here.

15. I'm only "painting" the RW gun owners with that "brush".
Not us.
We agree, It couldn't work. What they gonna do? Give "tests", and those who can repeat the "secret phrase" that Rush said the day before gets to keep their pieces?
I don't think so. they'll have to grab them ALL, and that's when I start reminding them that Clinton never took their guns. The Wingnuts need that reminder. WE don't.

But when have Wolfy and Rumsferatu and the rest of the PNAC Chickenhawks ever done anything that worked like it was supposed to?

"Try it first, clean the shit off our faces later" seems to be their policy.

4. Just speculating.
Just because I don't support your guy does not mean I am a right-wing idealist. Just remember, stranger things have happened.

5. Sheesh... I didn't say anything about Clark
I just think some of the speculation threads are a little silly. And I don't think you're right-wing... I was trying to be sarcastic but obviously failed. Vote for the Democrat of your choice, and listen to a lot of Journey. It helps me. ;)

6. I think it would be pretty much like the last four years.
The average American would still be screwed - on the job, in public schools and everywhere else - but they'd just "deal with it," as usual. They wouldn't notice the more sinister things happening behind the scenes.

Eventually, something would have to give. You can't continue screwing with the economy, other nations and the environment. But I lived under virtual martial law during the 15 years I spent in public education, and I met virtually no teachers or parents who really had a clue what was going on. Most still don't.

9. I'd probably either flee or fight... there would be a civil war...
and I think there are definitely more people who would not support the idea than those that would...

They'll still have their distractions, you can count on that. And since they were never politicized, the loss of political liberty won't be a biggie. Only "extremists" will care.

A vocal minority will cheer that, at last, the subversives and traitors are being rounded up.

And Bush's opponents will be cowed and corralled, with a few, likely, driven underground, marking perhaps the beginning of armed resistance. If martial law is enacted on the heels of a major "terrorist" attack, I suspect a good number of "leftists" will argue that the measures are necessary for public safety, and side with Bush.

The ground is being prepared for martial law. When it comes, as it undoubtedly will after the next significant attack on American soil, for most Americans it won't seem as earth-shattering as the attack itself. Most will welcome it. (And of course, it will be merely "temporary".)

19. Good post, and exactly right
I actually look for the rigged election to go through in 2004, and then for martial law to be declared very early in 2005 under whatever pretext is convenient. (Before an investigation into the 2004 election can really gear up). I do not believe Bush and his cronies will leave office voluntarily under any circumstances. I like Canada. Hope I will be welcomed.

14. I'm trying not to engage in this kind of thinking
Been avoiding the TV news for a whole week because it's too upsetting. Visions of people's houses being bulldozed and tanks running over cars and stuff. No, thank you. I watched John Edwards on C-span yesterday afternoon, talking about giving George Bush the values debate he's asking for. It was very uplifting. I choose to hope one of the half-dozen Democratic candidates I really like will knock this criminal out of office.

17. Real Patriots in government
The real Patriots in this country's service will not allow it to stand for very long. In fact, they will stop it in it's tracks. That's about all we can count on.

The real Patriots in DC must be absolutely fuming at being played on September 11. They hold the cards to the future of the US. Let's hope they begin laying them out for all to see.
