1. Soviet Totalitarianism was no better than any other Totalitarianism.

Idealistically they were somewhat better than the Taliban, but realistically they were just as bad.

2. Tell that to the women of Afghanistan
Under the PDPA (pro-Soviet) government, Afghan women had the right to not wear a veil, to go to school (including university -- for free!), to date and marry who they wished, etc. There was full legal equality between men and women under the "Soviet totalitarian" government of Najibullah.

At the same time, the U.S.-supported mujahedin "freedom fighters" -- now known as al-Qa'ida and the Talib'an -- were massacring women who refused to abide by the Sha'riya (fundamentalist law).

I would recommend researching a topic before making a comment.

3. PDPA were in many ways helping to make Afghan. more
..progressive. They built technical institutes, powerplants and really became the thorn in the side of those that think like bin laden (who is what? Just another right wing theocrat).
