Pro-Bush pop-ups on DU???

Here's a new one...I log into DU, and the first thing I get is a pop-up ad from "Medical Liability Reform" with a large picture of Chimmpy and the text "President Bush supports medical liablilty reform. Shouldn't you?" Under this was a flashing button, labeled "Tell Congress."

First off, I can easily imagine what sort of "medical liability reform" Captain Crotchsock supports. And I want no part of it.

But the biggest question is: just why am I getting subjected to an ad from Bush's corporate supporters when I log into DU? Might we want to take another look at who we accept ads from?

There's a post in the Bugs forum by me that Elad answered with a link for software to clean up this invasive software.

For spyware like gator...

That would explain your pop-ups.

9. opera browser

I'm using the Opera browser & haven't experienced these pop-ups, perhaps because Opera is one of the browsers that can control pop-ups. It's nice, and tends to load webpages faster than Netscape or IE.

6. I got that one..

earlier today. I use this thing called 'ad-aware'(www.ad-aware.com)to clear my computer off from those things. I think it's similar to the programs that other people are also recommending.

10. Ad-Aware and Spybot in combo are best.

Since the two programs search for different types of bots. Together they should keep your computer pretty free and clean. A program that blocks popups such as GoogleToolbar or the Mozilla browser www.mozilla.com will help alot too. Also, a software firewall will help you to limit what cookies get into your computer. Norton and ZoneLabs www.zonelabs.com both make good ones, and ZoneLabs offers a free version of theirs.

other than the ocassional bug (and problems with multi-media apps), the new version of Moz Firebird is fast, air-tight and zaps pop-ups (can't remember ever getting one)

14. It might have come from the site you were at immediately before

you came here--I find some popups don't actually popup until after I leave the site they are for. NYTimes is especially bad that way.

If you enter the message board through the front page, you may get a popup ad. I don't know how that works, but I PM'd a mod a while back and he confirmed that there are occasional ads.

However, if you bookmark the "lobby" page, the ads don't popup.

To test: Delete history, cookies, temp files, etc. Then go directly to the homepage. If there is the same popup, it's probably from DU.

Or, the easiest thing is to go to "Ask the admin" page and... ask the admin.

17. Earlier suggestions are right on track

First, use Spybot and Ad-aware to get rid of the nasties.

Second, use a browser like Mozilla Firebird to suppress pop-ups. Opera and Mozilla also have this option.
(Firebird has an option to allow them if you want, but the default is to kill the beasts. It also allws for other sensible precautions, like refusing "cookies" except in the few cases (like DU) where you trust the source and they serve some useful (to you) function.)

Third, be sure to keep a firewall like ZoneAlarm running to let you know when any program accesses the net and lets you say yes or no.

Fourth, run an anti-virus program like AVG regularly to make sure the computer is your tool, rather than the opposite.

All are free, very capable, and very important. There are other virus killers and firewalls and browsers you might choose and get the same benefits, but these are the ones I know well enough to recommend.
