Seems like all I can think about is *'s lies. Every day I tune in here to DU to see what further malfeasance has been perpetrated upon us. It has become an obsession--an understandable one given the grave consequences--but an obsession nevertheless.

I have to remind myself that * is only a symbol for an evil that goes very deep and has been around a very long time--was already present at the beginning of this country. * and those interests he represents are its current malignant manifestation.

We are at a turning point in not only American history, but human history. I am as certain of this as I am certain that I am sitting here writing this, yet it is difficult to know what might be the right words.

We are at a turning point in history--the fate of the whole of humanity will be determined by what happens in the next few years--by what decisions are made, who makes them, and how they are made. Somehow we need to become increasingly conscious of this fact. By 'conscious' I mean not only aware in our thoughts, but in our feelings and in our bodies, down to the marrow of our bones. Somehow we need to find that one weakness in the infrastructure of evil (there always is one) and there apply focused pressure with all our might.

It is not merely coincidental that 'The Lord of the Rings' is being presented to our collective conscience at this time. Heroic myths such as this speak of a real, human need and a real, human possibility.

It is important that we awaken to the political/economic/environmental realities that now have us where we are--the consequences of all human history that has gone before us. But at the same time we have to search for something WITHIN ourselves, search for the emergence of humane qualities which seem quite at odds with 'the enemies' that not only surround but permeate us. Is there anything of purity, uncorrupted by the taint of fear and greed? Ultimately we must all face the consequences of our choices; the consequences of how consciously we have lived--or not. This is our fate. That it may be possible for us to be more than we have so far been--that is our hope.
