3. More than likely, it will be expressed as "National Security"
rather than "The War On Terror". National security has a better ring to it when you are killing people on the other side of the world... Terror could happen anywhere, but "national security" ties everything into the "homeland". It gets people a bit more emotional.

Just my 2 cents worth.

4. Well, I think we've settled the 'are we safer' argument....
A few cancelled flights, a terror alert and several dead American soldiers have proven that point. What changed? NOTHING!

5. Let's take a look at that phrase, shall we?
<snip>

Likewise, U.S. national security policy has been led astray by
the notion of a "war on terrorism," argued former national
security Zbigniew Brzezinski in a thoughtful speech last week.

The "war on terrorism" is a poor and misleading formulation
because it is an abstraction, he said. Its misplaced
concreteness obscures the nature of the enemy rather than
clarifying it.

"Terrorism is a technique for killing people. That doesn't tell
us who the enemy is. It's as if we said that World War II was
not against the Nazis but against blitzkrieg," Brzezinski
said.

By framing national security policy as a generic response to
"terrorism," Brzezinski suggested, the Administration has made
it harder to distinguish among different kinds of terrorist
threats, to weigh the capabilities of particular terrorist
organizations, to devise countervailing strategies and to
allocate resources where they would be most likely to improve
security.

8. It shouldn't be the #1 issue
If it is the #1 issue, we will surely lose the next election.

For a Democrat to win, we MUST emphasize the economy to take back the Presidency. Remember national security or defense is a Republican issue and if that is emphasized we can count on 4 more years of Bush without a doubt.

9. Chances are that you're right
They will milk it for everything they can get. Unfortunately, the fear mongering just might work for them in the election.

Welcome to DU, Columbia.:hi: :toast:

15. There is no reason why this issue should benefit Republicans solely.
The Democratic candidates have done a bang-up job of showing all the ways in which we are NOT safe under the Bush administration.

I feel that National Security will be the top issue in the next election, and I think it's one we need to go to the mat with. 9/11 happened under the Bush watch, Bin Laden remains at large, al-Qaida appears to be quite reorganized, and the war against Iraq has threatened our relationships with allies, while destabilizing global security.

How again is this a Republicans-only issue?

13. I'm not so sure it is the number one issue
I haven't spoken to a single person who has even mentioned it as being important to them, yet I've spoken with a lot of people who are wondering where next weeks food/bill money is coming from.People seem far more scared of losing their jobs than of terror attacks.

14. The number one issue should be health care and rising costs.
Not the so-called war on terror. Estimates are that approximately 18000 people die every year in the US due to lack of health care coverage and that doesn't even cover the number who die due to inadequate coverage such seniors. It never ceases to amaze me how we fail to put things into perspective and announce that things like the "war on terror" are the number one problem facing our nation. It is a problem, to be sure, but totally blown out of proportion to other problems that we face.

It never ceases to amaze me how the otherwise intelligent people of our country have been convinced that spending our nation's wealth on better ways to kill people is so much more important than spending that money to improve the lives of our people.

17. Like every other fictious war...
you can't win a war on a non-country. It just can't be done like the failed wars on poverty and drugs.

It's time to start negogiating.
