My Congressman is a GOP Target & I'm proud of him
Rep Gene Taylor (D), MS is one of 35 Democrats "targeted" by repukes for defeat in 04. Taylor has no opponent. The filing deadline is 9 JAN. He voted against bush's tax cuts and the medicare bill. He said his votes were related to rising budget deficits. He spent Christmas in Iraq supporting our troops with a whole bunch of home cooking. A Taylor spokesman said the Congressman will debate Hastert and Delay anytime about their agenda and how much they added to the debt the past three years but he's not going to respond to a press release. GO GENE.

My info comes from an AP story datelined Jackson MS in this mornings Sun Herald of Biloxi, MS. There is no web link and the story did not list the other 34 proud warriors. If they are GOP targets, they must love America and love the Constitution.

2. He's my Congressman, too.
My opinion about Gene Taylor has been mixed over the years, but it seems the Bush gang has brought him back to his roots. Taylor has always fought hard for our veterans, and I would like to see a Republican challenge his record on that issue. I would also enjoy seeing Taylor explaining to our local people all the ways the Bush gang has screwed our veterans and the people still serving in our military.

3. I really admire Congressman Taylor
Edited on Sat Dec-27-03 11:29 AM by jsw_81
Although I don't agree with him on most social issues, I admire the fact that he's willing to stand up to Bush in the middle of Bush country. That takes guts.

Unfortunately, I'm "represented" by the worthless Jennifer Dunn, a woman who does nothing but kiss GOP ass 24/7. She even named her son after Reagan!

4. Gene's seat is pretty safe.
I met him once, very briefly, during his initial campaign, and have been in his Gulfport office several times to speak my mind to his local staff. His seat may be targeted, but it is pretty safe. Gene is a solid moderate in a red state, and no Rep really wants to go up against him.

I moved from the Gulf Coast in '99 and am now represented by a Rep congressman.

5. The real tactic
The real tactic by targeting "safe seats" is so we waste money defending them. That makes a difference when we don't have that much cash to spare. The repugs have a HUGE hard money advantage so they can afford to waste a few bucks. Monetary attrition strategy.

6. I can't disagree with you GROK
However, I know Taylor does a good job of pissing off the white house. And, on the other hand, riling up the dems in safe districts might not be the best strategy for winning a national election.

7. Depends on What they Mean by "Targeted"
The late Senators Paul Wellstone and Mel Carnahan had "safe" seats too.

8. The guy Taylor replaced died in a plane crash.
His name was Larkin Smith and he was a former sheriff and a Republican. His wife ran against Taylor and lost.
