As for either God OR Satan starting earthquakes at the request of the Idiot Son of an Asshole, I don't find that very likely. Nor do I believe it was any sort of secret tectonic weapons. We had a 6.8 up here nearly 3 years ago... just a couple weeks after the Moron illegally assumed office. Now I know that one wasn't "the wrath of God", because nobody around here voted for that bastard. Earthquakes fall under the category of "shit happens", unfortunately.

Anyway, I agree with the posters here; I do not believe that we have figured out a way to create earthquakes underground. That's science fiction (still....). Besides, if we were to be that dastardly and evil, we would probably get a 7.0 richter earthquake right smack in the middle of New York for our efforts.

And it is true that this is an area that has frequent earthquakes. But it seems that there is an increase in earthquakes lately, and also the magnitude.

So maybe God is pissed?

they only list earthquakes with the most casualties. A lot of major earthquakes are not listed, because for some reason they weren't as destructive.

For example, in 1991 Central America had a 7.7° earthquake, the biggest quake in the world during 1991. Luckily there were only 127 casualties (in Costa Rica and Panamá), although there was a lot of destruction. Over $200 million (1991 US dollars) in damages, and over 4,000 houses collapsed only in CR.

on edit: The earthquake was so powerful that it caused the Caribbean shoreline to raise up to 1.85 meters in some parts. That caused the instant death of the coral reef.

a comparatively massive quake in California terms, and would have been devastating anywhere else in the world considering the potential spread in damage to communities local to the epicenter - but it did little more than derail an Amtrak train passing through and caused very little serious structural damage in the area.
Not to mention the 7.9 Alaska Quake of 2002 - which, according to the USGS, was strong enough to have caused "sloshing water" in Lake Pontchartrain and muddy well water throughout the US and Canada but caused few casualties, Pasa Robles/Cambria quake last week (two unfortunate casualties), and the Nisqually/Puget Sound 6.8 quake in 2001 (the quake mentioned earlier by another DU'er).

There are many major quakes all over the world. Not all of them do damage in human terms - generally, the most damage is in areas where the local infrastructure has been built up without taking into consideration from local quakes that may or may not occur.

Now, I wouldn't be surprised if there is more instability in earth movement due to human activities such as over-drilling, mining, and underground explosive testing which could potentially affect the more sensitive aquifers and fault pressure/slip areas - but I'm going to have to be wishful but still skeptical to imagine that Shrub and co have some sort of direct causation to the increase in quake activity.

Especially since I believe that the increase in natural disasters in California can only serve to ultimately harm the current Shrubco stooge who stole the governor's office - Californians do not take kindly to disaster mismanagement, and they don't have a Democratic party figurehead to blindly shift blame to anymore.

Oman doesn't have the famed dust storms of Iraq and this time of the year the sky is blue as blue can be. About ten days ago I awoke and the house was really dark not the usual morning sun streaming in. So I looked out the window and I couldn't believe what I was seeing....EVERYTHING WAS BROWN. The sky was totally obscured and the air was still, heavy, and ominous feeling. The visibility was shit and I was spooked really deep in my core.

The neighbors were baffled this just hadn't happened here before. Some of them have lived here for 20 years or more. I just could not shake the thought that this was NOT some dust storm. To me it just seemed that for that much dirt and sand to get airborne it would have had to been displaced by some sort of powerful force.

Then the local news began reporting that the sand and dirt had been blown here from....IRAN. I told my neighbor if what I think happened in Iran happened (FYI I think some powerful explosive was detonated in the outback of Iraq) and it occurred anywhere in the vicinity of a fault line we could see a MF earthquake in the region soon.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Saying that the Busheviks caused the earthquake in Iran is like saying that they caused the latest tornado in the southern Plains or the latest hurricane in Florida or the latest blizzard in North Dakota.

Iran is an extremely earthquake-prone country, and the forces unleashed during an earthquake are much greater than anything humans can produce. Countries have been setting off nukes,both above and below ground, for over fifty-five years, and not one of them has ever been shown to cause an earthquake. Get a good geology textbook and read up on seismology.

I'm willing to consider that the sandstorm in Oman was the by-product of some Bushevik hanky panky in Iraq, but it could also be one of the weird effects of global warming. In any case, the conceivable mechanisms for causing a sandstorm and for causing an earthquake would be quite different.

I like a good conspiracy theory as much as anyone, but I prefer the ones that are plausible.

There is a theory that when the sun reaches peak activity in an 11-year cycle, and coronal discharges from sunspots causes geomagnetic storms, that these storms disrupt the earth's magnetic field. This in turn affects the molten iron at the earth's core leading to movement of the tectonic plates. We may also see an increase in volcanic activity as well.

This is information from one of my favorite meteorologists, Dr. Dewpoint (actually Joe D'Aleo, love that moniker!).
