The discovery of mad cow disease in the United States may give a major boost to the organic beef business because cattle raised organically are less exposed to the major risk factor for the deadly wasting disease.

To be certified as being organic by the Agriculture Department, beef cattle must be fed a strictly vegetarian diet, which would prevent them from being exposed to the kind of tainted feed suspected of causing the mad cow disease discovered in Washington state.

Additionally, organic cattle farmers rarely process meat from sick or injured animals, a common practice in the traditional meatpacking business that has been criticized by some food-safety activists. Organic producers also say they don't employ the kind of high-tech, high-pressure meat extraction systems used in traditional meat processing that some critics say can pull tissue from areas where the infection mostly occurs, the spinal column and brain, into the surrounding muscle tissue.

The National Cattlemen's Beef Association describes government and industry efforts to safeguard the American public from mad cow disease as "swift," "decisive" and "aggressive."<1> The US Secretary of Agriculture adds "diligent,"<2> "vigilant" and "strong."<3> The world's authority on these diseases disagrees.

Dr. Stanley Prusiner is the scientist who won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discovery of prions, the infectious agents thought to cause bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or mad cow disease. The word Dr. Prusiner uses to describe the efforts of the U.S. government and the cattle industry is "terrible."<4> What are these "stringent protective measures"<5> that the Cattlemen's Association is talking about, and how do they compare to global standards and internationally recognized guidelines?

In 1996, in response to the revelation that young people in Britain were dying from variant Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease (vCJD), the human equivalent of mad cow disease, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued seven "Recommendations." Numbers 5-7 were observations and/or recommendations for further research. The first four recommendations, however, were concrete proscriptions to reduce the likelihood of mad cow disease spreading to human populations.<6> To this day, the United States government continues to violate each and every one of these four guidelines.


#1. Stop Feeding Infected Animals to Other Animals The number one recommendation of the World Health Organization was that no "part or product" of any animal showing signs of a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE), or mad cow-like disease, should be fed to any animal.<7> "All countries," the guideline reads, "must ensure the slaughter and safe disposal of TSE- affected animals so that TSE infectivity cannot enter any food chain."<8> Yet, in the U.S., it remains legal to feed deer and elk known to be infected with a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy called chronic wasting disease to livestock such as pigs and chickens.

10. what exactly is halal meat?
I once dated a woman who bought all her meat from a halal meat guy, and it was great, and she raved about it, too.

I got the impression it's like the Arabic version of kosher, but I could be way off base here.

Anyone?

29. we've got a great co-op two blocks from me
here in Santa Monica. Sells the best meat. Pretty expensive however. Although it's gotten less so lately. There's a ranch that sells meat there and they also have some at Trader Joe's, called Niman Ranch. Best meat I've ever tasted. Supposedly it's all free-range, grass-fed, etc.

is to not eat beef (or any meat) at ALL. But it's a bit hypocritical of me to say that. As much as I've tried, the vegetarian stuff doesn't work well with me (although I did manage to cut down the only meats I'll eat to chicken and beef, no more pork, fish, and other animals), but I think that I will be buying organic beef from this point on...

Geez... what part of common sense do they not get? They are actually turning these cattle into cannibals. Canniballism is Taboo, at least where I come from.

38. You're partially right
They banned the feeding of cow parts to other cows in 1997, but they left a loophole in the law so that cow parts could be used in feed for other animals (including pigs, chickens, goats, sheep, AND pet food!). Now, hopefully we can get this last loophole closed up so they'll stop turning our normally vegetarian food animals into carnivores.

Thankfully, my in-laws are family farmers, and have neighbors who still raise limited numbers of livestock. So, occassionally they purchase a cow or pig and have it slaughtered and packaged by their local meat locker, and we get some of it from there.

We don't eat a lot of meat in our household generally, but we had t-bone steaks last night. On the white wrapping paper on the package was written "hold for Ann K." by the butcher. Ann K. is my mother-in-law, and that writing reminded me that we are so far removed from the people who grow our food these days. And how the quality of our food has become because of it.

the food animals. Your beef, lamb, chicken and eggs will be more expensive. You will eat less of them. It will be better for your health. No one should eat meat and animal products everyday anyway.

It should be illegal to eat meat because its cruel and due to greedy meat industry the food isnt even safe. the meat induistry is the most enviromentally unfriendly things U can do 2 the planet because the meat industry is dirty and it is unfrendly to the enviroment. sewage is a big problem, cattle needs alot of space 4 crops to feed the cattle, and its not good for your health anyway SO WHY IS IT STILL LEGAL? $$$ JUST LIKE TOBACCO. I once heard that it takes 200 acres of land to feed the cow per year. that made your one steak costs 200 acres of farmland for ONE STEAK! how many meals of salads and soy products and other stuff could of been grown on that land for humans? PROBABLY DOZENS IF NOT HUNDREDS. But nooooooooooooooo, "I don't want to eat icky soy meat I want 2 eat the dead flesh of a murdered cow instead! YUMMY YUMMY! who cares whats best for the planet and humanity I JUST CARE ABOUT MYSELF AND MAKING OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE ANOTHER MILLION DOLLARS THIS YEAR WHO CARES IF I LOOK LIKE SOME REDNECK? i dont care how the sewage is removed or how many acres of forest are destroyed to raise the crops for my dead cow muscle. there is an awful lot of land that isn't suited for anything but open range cattle ranching.

And just because you think it's wrong doesn't mean you should shove your beliefs down other people's throats.

If you want to be a vegan, go right ahead. Personally, I feel I have a right to indulge in whatever self-destructive behavior I so desire, whether it's smoking cigars or riding a bike without a helmet.

going on. 99% of everything in the ocean is eaten
alive by something else. Animals and insects kill and
eat each other daily and much of it is done cruelly.

You judge meat eaters harshly, but the truth is even
without us the world would continue to be a carnivorous
and killing place.

the diseased cow or cows were made part of the US food supply?
Responses thus far have been somewhat ambiguous. It is
my understanding that the US can still have a so called clean bill of health if the cow or cows that were found were imported. This may
be the reason that they are focusing on Canadian cows.

18. At this point, with all the finger pointing,
I think both the U.S. and Canadian markets will be negatively affected. While some people will ignore the warnings altogether, I think many people will simply rule out beef altogether,no matter where it's from. They'll just remember that they heard there was a U.S. connection and a Canadian connection.

the drop in beef eating will be dramatic.

They may have quit putting animal tissue in feed
but my understanding is that the milk products
they raise calves on contains by products from
animal blood.

This is still forced cannibalism.

Plug for a local group of family farms providing fresh, natural foods raised humanely without hormones and subtherapeutic antibiotics. Check them out at goodnatured.net

As someone said above, you will pay more but it's worth it.

I love their eggs and they always put a little type-written note in the carton about how things are going on the farms. Plus, they bottle their milk in reusable glass containers that you return to the store.

You won't find any family packs of hamburger made by them. Just selected small cuts of meat but I like them.

Those rotted products kill millions.

And yet, marijuana, which has never killed anyone EVER, is made illegal to protect the greedy corporations that run the country now.

Which just shows that Democrats should support ending the Republican launched drug war NOW. It is a massive violation of our civil liberties.

There was also a hepatitis outbreak in the south this year, and that was also linked to green onion. I'm not sure if there were any fatalities linked to that outbreak.

stick with the smaller producers, the ones who are really into it.

Also, support your local farmer's market if you have them. We have quite a few here in S. Cal and the produce is just GREAT from them.

37. Fucking ween yourself off eating animals, start w/ beef and get your jones
from pork and chicken, etc...you WON"T miss the beef (and you'll be slimmer and healthier) then cut out the pork (it'll be easier then you think.) just eat poutry & fish...And when your ready...you'll find a lot of great recipes in the meantime...you'll give up the fowl and then the fish, (full of mercurey) etc...But you MUST make some conscious effort towards that goal.

I would never, EVER buy organic foods. I went into one of those stores, and it reminded me of a horse feed lot. Grains, oats, barley...who eats that stuff anyways(besides cattle)???

is the system you rely on.

Here (Australia) every animal is tagged, and when sold must have a detailed written history re feeds, health & medicines and previous owners (if any).

Every animal is inspected by a vet pre-sale, and sick/injured animals are rejected.

The Washington BSE cow was a 'downer' (unable to stand) when it arrived for processing, but it was processed as 'fit' for human consumption..........and I gather that is considered 'normal'.......SHEESH!

49. organic--I grow my own
and use no sprays. green beans,peas,green peppers, pumpkin, turnip, swiss chard and corn all in the freezer as well as strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. I start my own seeds--and try to use seeds that are not coated with anything. But, cannot eat oats or grains--or bread or potatoes or any high glycemic indexed food. Makes my blood sugar go off the wall--way off the wall, as do a whole lot of fruits.

I will continue to eat meat. I once tried to be a vegetarian and stuck with that for three years, and did NOT feel good at all, even though I read practically every book there was out on vegetarian eating and was sure to keep informed. Always hungry. Too many carbs.

Think of it--Eskimos ate nothing but seal and whale and fish meat in their winter, as well as what caribou or elk they could catch. I mean there was no oats or no grains that we know of-theirs was a high fat diet, high proteing from animal diet and no one could figure out howcome their cholesteral levels were super fantastic- and that culture survived thousands of years on it! and did it well! although the native Americans in the north, did manage to dry beans, corn and berries and developed stone refrigerators that they dug down and lined with rocks to keep the meat cool.

I 'll eat the beef meat I have in my freezer because I have already eaten it over a period of time here- I may go off a couple of days to fish, since I live in Maine and fish is always fresh--but then we have the mercury problem with fish--what to do?

-we had some real good sauerbraten I made from a bottom round roast--mmm, marinated in spices , vinegar and wine for three days, then cooked and a gravy made from the juices with ginger added, or ginger snaps--served with red cabbage and potato.
