Arguments to Make for Various Types of Voters

Divided government is better.

It's likely that the GOP will retain the House.
And the Dems will have to run the table to regain Senate control - not very likely.

We've seen that in the past 3 years, government spending has gone up, up, up.. all while the government is controlled by the alleged party of smaller government. Which is why I think we need to make an argument for divided government in next year's election.

Libertarians win, to some degree. Gridlock slows the expansion of government. Ask Clinton.. he can tell us all about how govt spending only approximately matched the rate of inflation in the 90's. Porky pet projections get left-behind in partisan wrangling.

Conservatives win. Conservative ideals are often advanced with a Democrat in the White House, and vice-versa. The Defense of Marriage Act. The creation of the Environmental Protection Agency. The Americans With Disabilities Act. When a Republican signs conservative legislation, he's more likely to be labeled "mean-spirited." When a Democrat does so, he's more likely to be deemed "bipartisan." When a Democrat signs liberal legislation, he's smeared for being too much of a lefty; a Republican would be labeled "moderate" for doing so.

Swing voters win. Split government forces compromise, which prevents policy from going too far left or too far right, as far as they're concerned.

Liberals win. The first thing that comes to mind? We end-up with a treasure trove of court nominees. A new generation of young, healthy judges.. ready to strike-down conservative legislation before it even takes place. Court nominees.. life-appointed.. fighting for what is Constitutional for 10, 20.. 30 years? The gifts that keep on giving! And of course, the President has the power of the bully pulpit to pull the electorate back to the left, which means we can get more and more of our long-term goals within reach.

With all of these different groups of voters having an interest, we might want to consider trying this. 1% more of disaffected Republicans, 3% more of disaffected Libertarians.. it could add-up and make the difference between our victory and defeat.
