Which part of "The Congress" blocked "Mad Cow " regs
Why doesn't the media say which part of congress and if it was the Repugs who blocked the "Mad Cow" regs? CBS/AP) The Bush administration is taking major steps to boost confidence in the U.S. beef supply at home and abroad, where more than 30 countries have banned American beef products since mad cow disease first surfaced in Washington state a week ago.

In so doing, the administration enacted regulations that Congress blocked only months ago. <snip>

1. The AP story deletes all references to GOP actions!
Edited on Wed Dec-31-03 12:44 PM by papau
The AP story deletes all references to the fact that the actions that killed the meat safety improvements bill - which are now being implemented by Bush via regulation - were GOP actions!

I noted that also!

And it forgets to mention that it was Dems that pushed for greater safety in the meat supply - with our New York DEMOCRATIC PARTY MEMBER Congressman leading the way.

So the story has names of folks - but not much on party affiliation.

The AP Does note that the senior Dem on the House committee ALSO took dairy PAC money and voted against meat safety. Guess that was safe to tell us.

I guess the media is under orders not to make the GOP look bad - ever - about anything.

6. The media is just trying to be fair and balanced
If they can't say that Democrats did something wrong, then their position is that they shouldn't say that Republicans did anything wrong.

Just like airline cockpit protection. Just like accounting corruption. Just like about everything that Republicans make sure doesn't get done to make this country better and safer.

Now, the application of such cable 'news' fairness doctrine tends to work a little differently when it comes to Democrats. Then, equal time means that the newsies and the Republicans get to question Democratic patriotism, and Democrats are allowed to respond 'please don't call us traitors', which is only fair.

So don't worry, when Bush signs some new, minimalist beef-supply regulation, they'll laud him as the hero that protects America, and they'll give Democrats just as much opportunity as Republicans to say so. If they don't say so, then Democrats will be given just as much time as Republicans to answer whether 'Dems are playing politics' with America's beef safety.

That's 9-11 in a nutshell too.

The short version is that the American media has become the single most venal and most dangerous institution in America. They have become almost totally intellectually corrupt and they are getting worse.

4. GOP Congress Scuttled Meat Protection Measure ...link

GOP Congress Scuttled Meat Protection Measure
by Mark Sherman

WASHINGTON - Legislation to keep meat from downed animals off American kitchen tables was scuttled - for the second time in as many years - as Congress labored unsuccessfully earlier this month to pass a catchall agency spending bill.

Now, in the wake of the apparent discovery of the first mad-cow case in the United States, the author of the House version of the cattle provision wants to press the issue anew when Congress returns Jan. 20 from its winter recess. The massive, $373 billion spending bill covering several government agencies is still pending in the Senate.

"I said on the floor of the House that you will rue the day that because of the greed of the industry to make a few extra pennies from 130,000 head, the industry would sacrifice the safety of the American people," said Rep. Gary Ackerman, D-N.Y., chief House sponsor. "It's so pound foolish."

The provision dealing with downed cattle didn't even make it into the compromise version of the legislation that House and Senate conferees brought before Congress late in the year.

The Agriculture Department estimates that 130,000 downed animals that are too injured or sick to stand or walk unassisted are slaughtered every year.

The provision, which started through the legislative process as an amendment to an agriculture spending bill, would have effectively prohibited the sale of livestock too sick or injured to stand or walk unassisted.

The agricultural spending bill passed - with the provision intact - on a Senate voice vote in November after failing by three votes in the House in July. But congressional negotiators did not include it in the broader, $373 billion omnibus spending bill that passed the House this month and which is still awaiting a vote in the Senate.

Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-N.Y., a negotiator who voted for the measure in the House, said Democratic negotiators never had a chance to fight for the proposal.

"The Republicans, the leadership, shut off the conference, they closed it down, and this is one of a number of provisions which were handled in a backroom deal without the Democrats there and with only the Republican leadership," said Hinchey.

5. Great! AP has GOP reference in story!!! - old PAC money AP story was
never revised to include GOP info.

But I am glad for any and all moments of truth telling in the media - as opposed to the usual partial truth telling, anti-Dem spin -

And I smile on the editor at AP that put the headline on the Sherman story!

:-)

that Repukes did anything harmful, or Dems did anything positive. Of this fact, taxes, and death am I sure.
