Indiana govt/politics, KKK, Eugene Debs & Kurt Vonnegut - Comments?
I'm working on articles about government and politics for each of the 50 states, largely targeting a younger audience and adults who are just learning the ropes. I just put an article about Indiana online at
http://www.politix.us/us/in/index.php

Does anyone from Indiana care to comment on it?

To get a better idea of the concept, you might look at some other pages that are now online:

Alabama: http://www.politix.us/us/al/index.php
California: http://www.politix.us/us/ca/index.php
Illinois: http://www.politix.us/us/il/index.php

Thanks!

2. just a couple of things
your intro (on our boring state, with even more boring politics...) states that no president is from here - Wasn't President Benjamin Harrison from Indiana? And of course I would vote Quayle as a zero.

For entertaining politics - we sent liberal Andy Jacobs to Congress who was the first democrat (maybe the first member of the House) to speak out against the war in Vietnam. I believed his tenure in congress overlapped with rabid Congressman Dan Burton - whose antics are very entertaining (didn't he once shoot pumpkins to prove his conspiracy theories about the death of Vince Foster?)

While the Klan era is interesting - the roots of both right and left were nurtured in this seemingly hotbed of conservatism. Try contrasting the timing of when the Klan is in Power and Debs - the state has always been a bit more politically complex than most observers perceive.

Did you really have to introduce the whole thing with how boring Indiana is??? Geez.

4. Thanks for the feedback.
I think Benjamin Harrison was born in another state but spent a lot of time in Indiana. I was debating whether I should mention him.

I would rate Dan Quayle a zero, too. However, my site is going to awfully partisan as it is, so I'm trying to drop some names in the "Hero or Zero" column to stimulate thought and debate.

I was grasping at straws when I described Indiana as dull. I'm trying to find a unique theme for each state: Rugged independence and corporate corruption for Texas, multicultural vigilance in Hawaii, liberal grassroots with Republican governors for California.

I couldn't think what distinguishes Indiana, so I thought maybe I would describe it as a state that isn't known for its politics - and especially not for scandals (I hope!).

But I may find a new theme as I continue developing this project. I wish it didn't take so long; I was hoping to crank out at least ten states a day, but it's more like one or two!

5. Indiana is my adopted state
...although, to tell the truth, I really just consider myself a resident of Bloomington, that liberal bastion...I have no sense of affliation with Indiana outside of the city.

Bloomington, fwiw, is considered one of the few places in America with active ELF and ALF chapters who have performed acts of vandalism (some would say terrorism).

There was a long tree sit here to try to protect a karst, which ultimately failed.

Indiana has a strong environmental community because Indiana is still a really rural state compared to other places.

Frank McCloskey is an Indiana politician worth mentioning. He represented Indiana in the House. He's in the Pulitzer-winning book, A Problem From Hell, by Samantha Powers. Frank worked to help convince Clinton to intervene to stop the genocide of Muslims in the former Yugo. wars.

You should also look into the record of Birch Bayh, Evan's father. He was a progressive politician as far as the Vietnam war goes. Salin can tell you more about him.

One of the most famous residents of Bloomington was Hoagy Carmichael. He wrote Stardust Memories, one of, if not the most recorded songs of all time. He's buried in Bloomington.

Another person who is notable from the area is Ross Lockridge Jr. who wrote Raintree County. Some consider this one of the quintessential American novels. Raintree County is apparently modeled on Bloomington in the late 1940s.

Other people, other than Letterman, who are also from here and are national entertainment figures include John Mellencamp, Joshua Bell, Jane Pauley...and many others I'm sure I cannot recall.

Bloomington is a unique community, with people from more than 39 nations co-existing together. Their children attend public schools together. They learn about each other and their cultures together.

Unfortunately, sometimes Bloomington also has people who do not respect and value diversity and unity, such as the guy who went on a killing spree and killed a Korean student here, plus a black man who was a coach in Chicago, and another person in Chicago who was Jewish... He was part of Matt Hale's world church of the Creator...an Illinois racist Christian Identity sort of thing, I think.

Also, Ramsei...I don't know how to spell his name...Yousef, who is now in jail and who participated in the first WTC bombing was in Bloomington as a child.

There is a book, called Dissent in the Heartland, which talks about the activities in Bloomington during the Vietnam War era. Bloomington, along with Madison, WI, was one of the most active in opposition to the war, from what I've heard.

Much of the limestone which went into building the Capitol and other bldgs across the nation came from Indiana.

Though not representative of the whole, Bloomington boasts some of the world's greatest muscians in the school of music, is the home of Douglas Hofstadler, who wrote the Pulitzer-winning Godel, Escher, Bach, Willis Barnstone, who translated Borges and who also has done translations of the gospels and genesis which shed new light on the original language of those texts...

..as far as your kid sight...If my kids came across this one, I'd have a hard time with it because the information seems so obviously geared to putting down Indiana. It seems you lack both balance and much of any insight into Indiana politics, esp. the bloody eighth legislative district.

6. Indiana = Basketball
That's about it. :)

I haven't read your stuff yet but I did notice the reference to the KKK. Unfortunately, Indiana is known for it's Klan history...I grew-up with it all around me in North Central Indiana. My Dad's generation is as racist as racist can be (Inlcluding my dad :( ). Not voilently, mind you, but the N-word is a staple. But, I've always been plesently surprised by friends and those who I have known...None of them are as bigoted as the older generation...Not anywhere close. It's actually quite reassuring to see how different many of my "Good Ol' Boy" friends really are from their parents. We are winning. :)
