Bless Jessica Lynch.........
Edited on Wed Dec-31-03 02:51 PM by Cannikin
Thank you for keeping your honor intact by telling the truth about your ordeal. Thank you for not taking the bait and falling for the more material route of basking in the artificial fame that they dangled before you. I realize this may cost you many dollars. But you have your integrity and your dignity intact.
The war-mongers are still trying to spin your story into something they can benefit from. They're still releasing 'shocking' video, and parading Shoshana Johnson around in New York tonight. Thank you for not reducing yourself to being used as a trophy for the Bush administration.

God bless you and your family, Jessica Lynch.

1. Imagine Their Surprise
At CentCON when this girl turned out to really BE a hero -- I think that took a lot of guts to speak out against the propaganda, I was very impressed!!

2. Yes, Thank you Jessica Lynch
Thank you for your service. I don't agree with why you had to go to Iraq, but I always have and will support our troops. It took courage to be honest with your own experience at a time when powerful forces tried to distort the story for their political gain. It would have been easier for you to keep you mouth shut and sell out, but you didn't. There's a lot to be learned from you.

3. Sorry to Rain on The Parade
but why did she wait until after the book and movie deals were signed to tell the truth. She and her family made a TON of money on those deals.

5. Actually, I don't think she made a ton of money
The book deal, from what I've read, was a million dollars, split with the author, Rick Bragg. So her gross take was $500,000. But after taxes and the literary agent's standard 15% commission, it's down to $250,000.

The girl came home with a broken body. That hardly covers her pain.

11. Remember too, that she was still "active duty" until recently
Who knows what she was told during her "rehab"..She was kept incognito for a LONG time.. Even when she was a Walter Reed, HER room had a guard posted at her always-closed door.. When she was in germany, it was DAYS before her parents were even allowed to call her..

She will have lifelong problems from her injuries, and perhaps the promise for good medical care in the future was a trade-off for her playing along with the "official story"..

Her fiancee is also active duty, so she may have even feared for his safety if she said too much..too soon..

I only wish she had written to the people who were planning to make that movie BEFORE they even made it.. She could have contacted them and told them the whole thing was fabricated, and she planned to speak out.. Maybe they would have never made it..or maybe they would have made a better movie, which included the truth, and why the govt decided to spin the story so much..

23. That's right.. I forgot about her brother
That was probably a "thank you" to her Dad who was "unhelpful", to channel Rummy...

She had to leverage her response..

Edited on Wed Dec-31-03 02:47 PM by FlaGranny
if you do it 10 years later. Who knows why she waited. Perhaps she was in no physical condition to deal with the facts in the beginning. I also don't see a problem with making a ton of money on the deals. She was set up and used, both during her service in Iraq (only one among many) and when she was "rescued."

Edited to add phrase in parentheses.

7. I can't fault her for that. She has some major recovering to go through
and will probably have physical problems the rest of her life. Medical care costs money and we all know that the Bush administration keeps cutting benefits to the service people. There's nothing wrong with wanting to secure your future. Why do you think there is so much complaining now about job security, medical costs, insurance costs, and the list goes on?

10. Well ya know what, she deserves a ton of money! Remember
she was in military so she could go to college and become a teacher. Yeah, they weren't exactly a well-to-do family.

Give her the "ton of money"...better than *'s cronies getting it.

13. Shows more honor and integrity than say Robert McNamara
Who waited decades to tell the truth, and refused to do so when it could have made a difference.

Jessica shows more integrity than most so-called responsible government officials.

Regardless of any money she may have recieved, her story was told while the events are still current, and when it could affect those events

18. I did some research on that...
...because it was my first reaction too, but Miss Lynch bailed out of the movie deal (for undisclosed reasons).
The sole "consultant" for the movie was the Iraqi lawyer.

I still wonder how it is possible that they can do a movie about someone without that person's consent, but I guess they did it to Martha Stewart and Ronald Reagan too.

4. I completely agree, Cannikin
Jessica Lynch is a True American in the finest sense of the word. Brave and honest enough to debunk those disgusting Bushevik lies even though she likely would have been guaranteed a lucrative career at Faux or somewhere in the vast structure of Goebbels v2.0.

I agree, God Bless Jessica Lynch.

Happy New Year DU'ers. Thank you for making me feel welcome.
And I have to be the bigger person and actually thank Rush for turning me on to this site. His spell over me has been broken ever since.

Now we have to get the Ents to keep him trapped in Isengard until we get Sauron and the rest of the Nasgul....ok that was for the LOTR fans.

"You have no power here. Be gone, before somebody drops a house on you, too."
And that was for all of my gay friends.....

15. I dont think there was ever one big story...
Edited on Wed Dec-31-03 03:07 PM by Cannikin
The stories of her 'dramatic rescue' were discounted by her on a regular basis. She's refused to pretend she went out fighting in a blaze of glory. She told the truth about her fear and what really happened.
When I heard Ms. Johnson was participating in the New Year's celebrations in New York, I thought to myself that if Jessica had played along with the press releases, it would be her lowering the ball.

19. "parading Shoshana Johnson around in New York tonight"
Wtf? I saw her on GMA this morning, and she was NOT being paraded by anyone. In fact, she's doing what SHE wants to do, no thanks to the Army or Bushco.
Why do you even bring her name up?

20. Thanks, Shoshana dig was quite uncalled for
Shoshana is walking around with bullets still lodged in her feet, she was given partial disability, no book deals, no movie deals, no falsely placed hero worship. So if someone is finally recognizing her sacrifice, why is someone here trying to cast a bad light on that???

21. Agreed - Shoshana has had her share of crap from the war mongers..
... leave her alone.

If she's making a buck now telling her story - then good for her. The military certainly isn't taking very good care of her after injuries.

24. I didnt make my point clear...
Edited on Wed Dec-31-03 04:55 PM by Cannikin
I meant no personal attack on Ms Johnson. Simply put, she's having to fill in where Jessica wont. And if she's come out and said that things didnt go down the way the official press releases said, I'll write a seperate post equally praising her too. I meant no 'dig' on her.

And the money comments...She made her money telling the truth. Not telling propoganda. Nothing wrong with that in any way.

25. You should take back the dig about Shoshana.
You're so wrong on that one I can't get into it now. I have to go celebrate the New Year.

While I'm at it, I think I'll celebrate Shoshana's strength in having to endure stupid ass remarks like yours. She's had just as much physical agony and emotional distress as Jessica, but you hail the blonde as a hero and the brunette as a pawn.
