it's the article written by Eric Bates in current newsstand edition of Rolling Stone....just bought it today, as I loaded up on Rush's second favorite supplement: Vitamin "V"
January 22, 2004
thumbing through, waiting to give birth, it really blows, with few exceptions.
for the days of HST, Tim Ferris, Timothy Crouse.
Thompson's serialization of Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail remains one of the most insightful pieces of realtime political journalism EVER written, aside from being the most savagely hilarious.
Dick Tuck.....Ibogaine.....the Zoo Plane....Steadman's cartoons
he was the first person (by a VERY long shot, too) that predicted McGovern's nomination, because he bothered to, uh, be a JOURnalist, and did some actual reporting, rather than listening to the blowhards who accepted the conventional wisdom that the nominee would be decided on the basis of the old game: backroom deals and upfront endorsements, when the party had changed the game during the chaos of the 68 fiasco, enabling smart pols like McGovern, Gary Hart, and Pat Caddell to make grassroot connections, and secure the actual delegates before the convention, making his nomination a fait accompli before any of the CW journalists, much less old line pols like Daley, Muskie, Humphrey, Scoop Jackson, etal, had a clue
great encounter with Nixon, too! he actually got a limo (I think) ride with him, in which they discussed nothing but football, leaving HST scratching his head in wonderment at Nixon's seeming deep/broad knowledge of the pro game
but, I digress.......must be the painkillers.
got any ether?
