A local freep had an LTTE published that attacked Russ Feingold for criticizing Bush while congratulating the troops. I let him have it:
Editor, The Post-Crescent:
Sometime soon, perhaps before this letter is published, the 500th soldier will die in Iraq. At this writing, the official toll as reported by the Department of Defense is 486 dead. Plus another 9000 troops evacuated from Iraq due to wounds or sickness, according to published reports. As many as 1500 of those people are now amputees. High tech body armor protects vital torso areas preventing death but extremities are still vulnerable to blast, shrapnel, and bullets.
In his letter to the editor published Sunday, January 4, Mike Xxxxxxx criticized Senator Russ Feingold as being insincere in his praise for American troops. His rationale was the Senator's vote against a 1999 military pay increase that was tied to other unsupportable legislation and his approval of U.S. participation in the NATO action in Kosovo where no Americans died.
Mike can't believe that Senator Feingold had the temerity to criticize President and Commander in Chief Bush for rushing us to war under questionable, now largely disproven, circumstances. After all, the President certainly had the interest of the troops in mind when he sent them off to war. And he sure was on their side last August when he proposed cutting their "imminent danger pay" by $75 a month and their "family separation allowance" by $150 a month. He loves them so much that he extended their deployment to give them a full year in harm's way and issued a "stop loss" order to keep them in the military past their discharge dates. He was even kind enough to outsource their logistical support to that paragon of honest dealing Halliburton, thus injecting the profit motive into the combat supply chain. The latest affront was to veterans, who face increased prescription drug copayments among other benefit cuts. Yeah, the President loves his troops. Just don't expect him to show up at all of those funerals.
