The Eagles are the worst band ever
Last night I was tortured.

Went wine tasting in Napa with a friend and some loose acquaintances. Had a decent time until the ride home. The MF driver decided to play the Eagle's greatest hits CD. Very loudly. And the four other people in the car were gleefully singing along to every song. I basically felt like Scanners for an entire hour. I was so happy when the CD ended.

Little did I know - there is a fucking Eagle's Greatest Hits 2 album. I'm not sure if I'll ever recover.

1. Never quite got the Eagles
Well-performed, well-written, but soulless.

23. I hated them
when I was in college, in the late 70's. I had a show on the college radio station (88.3 FM WRCT , Pgh,PA) and we lambasted the Eagles pretty regularly.

Despite still thinking that Henley takes himself way too seriously, I now give the Eagles credit for their ambition and the tightness of their songwriting. Bits like "Desperado" (a near-perfect paen for the white, spoiled, middle class American kid of the 70's) and "The Last Resort", a stunningly right-on appraisal of California's destructive growth, testify to the depth they could achieve when commercial success was relegated to the backseat. Which wasn't freuqently, in their case. I don't have any of their records, never purchased a single one.

Joe Walsh is one of American rock's greatest survival stories, and a very distinctive guitar voice.

The Eagles were very "of their time" - chances are, your sympathy toward them is commensurate with your overall fondness of the seventies.

And they were, truth be told, probably the biggest and most commercially successful American rock band to date. Equal parts CSNY, Gram Parsons and Buddy Holly. If they didn't exist, someone would have invented them.

42. class and race in "Desperado?"
as someone who sees class in almost everything, I'm stumped at trying to find it in "Desperado," which seems pretty universal to me, aside from being a great song.

If not, it's too damn weird you'd mention it.

5. You ever seen "The Big Lebowski"
there is a scene in the Movie where the main character known as "the Dude" was in a cab and the Eagles were playing.

He said "could you change the channel"

Cab driver "Fuck you man, if you don't like my fuckin' music get your own fucking cab."

Dude "Man I've had a rough fuckin' and I hate the Eagles".

The cab driver then throws him out of the cab.

30. Good catch with the Mojo quote
I will always and refer to the Eagles by their proper, Mojo Nixon given name: The Country Monkees.

If you want country rock, listen to the Flying Burrito Brothers. If you want music to snort coke and drink margaritas to on the porch of your condo, listen to the Eagles.

My parents played the Eagles all throughout my formative years, and to this day I tell them I should have turned them in for child abuse.

If you think the Greatest Hits CD is bad, you should hear their "new" album. Apparently, "There's A Hole In The World Tonight", and I wish the lot of them save Joe Walsh would fall into it and never come back.

43. Flying Burritos!!
They were one of my favorites whilst attempting to grow up in the '70s. (Saw them in a middle-of-nowhere place in Ramona, CA in like 1981...)Funny that your parents played the Eagles, guess you are younger than I thought. I think my parents were playing Engelbert Humperdink...
The Eagles were actually a very talented band in their day. I hated Hotel California, but the lyrics are (if you listen to them) spanking those same people you deride that snort coke and drink magaritas on the porch of their condos. And Joe Walsh, when on his own, did a lot of interesting stuff. By the way, what's wrong with Margaritas??

:spank:

25. I could never....
... understand the fuss about Edie Brickell. Her vocals sounded to me like Ricki Lee Jones after 3 six-packs. The woman couldn't carry a tune in an ammo box :)

It was a shame, because "her" band, the New Bohemians, was actually pretty good, but they never got any credit. It was Edie, Edie, Edie who tried to make her inability to sing an asset Brickell.

I'm glad she got sucked up to NY before she could do more damage here.

Oh, and Eagles, worst band ever? I'm not a "fan" since I prefer stuff like Eno, Squarepusher, Cocteau Twins, Boards of Canada - u know, out there stuff - but the Eagles are far, far, far, far, light years from being the worst band ever. Not in a world that spawned Air Supply and the Little River Band and the Bee Gees and N-Suck and so many many more :)

31. So image driven bad musicians = America?
The ONLY redeeming feature the Eagles had was Joe Walsh, and I suspect they only had him because they kept him too coked to the gills to realize he was in such a shitty band.

Glen Frye and Don Henley should be in sharing a cell in the Hague next to Slobodan Milosevic.

34. The Eagles over the Who?
The only musical crime the Who ever perpetrated was Tommy, and that's a minor infranction compared to the band who gave us both "Tequila Sunrise" and the only song more overplayed on "classic rock" radio than Stairway, "Hotel California".

And don't even get me started on Witchy Woman.
